Witchy Halloween-Themed Workout

Halloween is around the corner, and I'm so excited! This is my favorite time of year. I love seeing people's creativity, and now that I live in the 'burbs, I love seeing how all of my new neighbors are decking out their houses. Skeletons on Adirondack chairs? Who thinks of this stuff! Next year, once we're all settled in the new house, I'm determined to have the creepiest house on the block.

Halloween also marks the beginning of a hard time for a lot of people: the holidays. Of course, the holidays are joyous and fun, but they're also when people start to fall off the healthy bandwagon and we start to hear, "Well, come New Year's..."

NO, PEOPLE! You can enjoy the holidays and still keep up that healthy lifestyle. It's all about balance, moderation, and making healthy living fit into the holiday fun.

To help get you started, I put together this Witchy Halloween Themed Workout. Get your sweat on, and then go ahead and get your candy on, too.

HOW TO DO THE MOVES:

Frankenstein Walk (aka soldier kicks): Start standing with feet hip-width apart and raise both arms up into the air. In one fluid motion, engage your core and kick your left leg out straight in front of you and as high as you can. At the same time, bring your right arm straight down to meet your left foot (or as close to it as possible). Return to starting position and repeat on the other side. Continue marching like Frankenstein until you reach 20 reps per side.

Vampire Resurrection (aka straight leg sit ups): Lay on your back, legs straight and arms straight out on the floor above your head. With the core engaged, sit up, bringing your arms over your head, like you're rising up out of your coffin. Reach out to touch your toes. Try not to swing your arms for momentum, keep the power in your core. Repeat for 20 reps.

Pumpkin Pickers (aka goblet squats): Stand with feet about hip width apart, feet turned slightly out. Hold a kettlebell, weight or a pumpkin in close to the chest with both hands. Send your hips back and drop down into a squat as low as you can go, keeping your torso upright and knees pointed out. You don't have to stop at 90 degrees if you have the mobility to drop down further. Stand back up to start and repeat for 20 reps.

Creepy Crawlers (aka spider pushups): Start in a plank position, with your hands under your shoulders, back flat and core engaged. Lower your torso by bending your elbows out to the sides. As you lower down, bring your left knee in to touch your left elbow. Straighten your arms back to a plank position. Repeat on the right side. Continue for 10 reps per side.

Spook the Skeleton (aka star jumps): Start standing with your feet hip-width apart. Lower down into a squat and twist slightly to the left, bringing your right hand down to touch your left foot. Your left arm should raise up into the air. As you raise back up, jump straight up into the air (as if you were spooked by something creepy crawly), raising both arms up to form a star shape with your body. When you land immediately go back down into a squat and twist to the right, bringing your left hand down to touch your right foot and raising your right arm into the air. Jump back up into a star and repeat for 20 reps.

Werewolf Kicks (aka glute kickbacks): Start on hands and knees, hands under shoulders, back flat and core engaged. Keeping your leg bent at a 90-degree angle, squeeze your glutes and lift your left leg up into the air until your hamstring is in line with your back. The bottom of your shoe paw should be facing the ceiling. Slowly lower back down and repeat for 20 reps before switching legs.
