Deal with stress

Be aware of what triggers your stress and just how you react. You may be able to prevent some of the triggers and learn to get ready for or manage others. Stress is a a part of life and affects people in different ways. It just becomes a problem when it makes you feel uncomfortable or distressed. A balanced lifestyle can help you manage stress better. For those who have trouble winding down, you might find that relaxation breathing, yoga or meditation can help.

Find balance

One of the first steps you can take to improve your mental well being is live a life of balance. Allowing anyone thing to consume your life will throw you out of trouble of balance. It is important to balance work, diet, fitness, and relaxation into your daily and weekly routine. Your brain must focus and function, but it also needs time off work to relax.

Encourage good physical health

Good physical health supports good mental health. Healthy eating habits, regular exercise and adequate sleep protect kids from the stress of tough situations. Regular exercise also decreases negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression.

Connect with others

Develop and maintain strong relationships with people around you who will support and enrich your life. The caliber of our personal relationships has a great effect on our wellbeing. Putting effort and time into building strong relationships can bring great rewards.

Take time to enjoy

Set aside time for activities, hobbies and projects you enjoy. Allow yourself to be spontaneous and creative once the urge takes you. Do a crossword; take a walk in your local park; read a book; sew a quilt; draw pictures with your kids; have fun with your pets – whatever takes your fancy.

Meditation

Sometimes, it requires great effort to give your brain time off work. If your thoughts seem to speed along without your consent it might take great effort to stop them. One of the purposes of meditation or mind relaxation is to do just that. We find that meditating on spiritual things improves my outlook. You might prefer to imagine yourself on a mountaintop or through the beach. Take your mind on a mini-vacation in the stress, depression, worry, or racing thoughts that plague you. It might not be easy, but it can be done.

Rest and refresh

Go to sleep at a regular time each day and practice good habits to get better sleep. Sleep restores both your mind and body. However, feelings of fatigue can continue to set in if you feel constantly rushed and overwhelmed when you’re awake. Allow yourself some unfocussed time each day to refresh; for example, let your mind wander, daydream or simply watch the clouds go by for a while.

Eat right

When you don’t feel well mentally your eating habits reflect it in a single of two ways, either you overeat or don’t eat whatsoever. Some people find comfort in food, usually high fat, carbs, and starches. Others find that their appetite is completely gone. Neither extreme is healthy. Much like your body, in order for your brain to function properly you must eat right. Eat a mixture of fruits and vegetables and foods high in Omega 3, like fish.

Ask for help

This can be as easy as asking a friend to babysit when you have some time out or talking with your doctor (GP) about where you can find a counselor or community mental health service. The perfect, worry-free life does not exist. Everyone’s life journey has bumpy bits and also the people around you can help. If you don’t get the help you’ll need first off, keep asking until you do.
