There's a common misconception about smoothies. Many believe smoothies are for warm spring and summer days, but the idea that a smoothie can't be enjoyed in the fall and winter months is utter smoothie poppycock. Yes, I said it. POPPYCOCK!
Smoothies can be an all-year-round affair, especially if you whip them up with seasonal ingredients and flavors. Don't believe me? This oatmeal raisin smoothie bowl tastes just as good (if not better) on a chilly, stay-inside-by-the-fire kind of day than it would on a sun-is-shining-birds-are-chirping kind of day. This gingerbread smoothie is best served with a countdown to Christmas. And this Spiced Maple Latte Smoothie? Well, it's a winter smoothie lover's dream.
The idea for this smoothie came to me on my recent trip to Savannah. A Starbucks in the Savannah airport was advertising a maple latte. I thought it sounded quite tasty. Had I not already had plenty of caffeine that day, I probably would have opted for one. Instead, I made a mental note to try creating one at home... in smoothie form.
I pulled out my necessary smoothie ingredients (almond milk and a frozen banana for that oh-so-creamy texture) along with instant espresso powder and the bottle of Now Foods Organic Maple Syrup I keep on standby for things like waffles or pumpkin maple bacon oatmeal.
Then, I headed to my spice cabinet to see how I could really up this smoothie's game. A dash of cinnamon? A sprinkle of allspice? A touch of nutmeg? Yes, yes and yes please!
A quick flick of the switch on the Vitamix and this smoothie was ready to be devoured. And devour it I did.
Not only did this smoothie fill me up, but it also perked me up. The maple syrup combines with the wintery spices for a delicious wintery smoothie that I'm definitely going to have on repeat.
