Six Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Last week, I traveled to Cincinnati for work. Before I get into the crux of this post, I just want to take a minute to show you the hotel I stayed at because it was INCREDIBLE. The 21c Museum Hotel is a gorgeous hotel that is also a contemporary art museum! Each room is a work of art, but there is also a whole gallery you can explore. There was eye candy at every corner, and the room was stunning.

Yep… that’s a boob protruding from the shower tile. I also may or may not have taken the body wash home with me (#feellikeagrandma #noshame). It’s from Malin + Goetz and smells so good! Have any of you tried that brand?

There was also art at ever turn, even in the gym!

Anyway! Onto what this post is all about! Traveling can wreck havoc on your healthy lifestyle. You’re thrown out of your routine. You’re in a new city filled with new foods to try, hotels with beds that tempt you to just climb in instead of workout, and you’re miles away from your gym. But being in a new place doesn’t mean you have to give up on your goals! Instead, use these Six Tips for Staying Fit & Focused While Traveling.

1. Pack healthy snacks – No matter where you’re traveling to, you can be certain that unhealthy foods will be around every corner (the office I was working at in Cincinnati had a seriously tempting candy bar). Think ahead and pack your favorite healthy snacks to ward off hunger and steer clear of unhealthy goodies. Some of my favorite on-the-go snacks are Quest Bars, apples, and protein powder. A lot of times, I’ll mix chocolate protein powder into my morning coffee for a protein-rich mocha!

2. Grocery shop – When you get to your hotel, ask where the closest grocery store or market is. If you can, make a trip to stock up on any goodies you couldn’t bring with you. Most hotel rooms come with mini fridges to stash perishable items. Get yourself some veggies and hummus, pre-cooked hardboiled eggs, fruit, or Greek yogurts to take along to business meetings or vacation adventures.

3. Workout in your room – Most hotels have some sort of fitness room, but they can be a little lackluster. Plan for bare-bones gyms by packing a fitness DVD or some sort of workout to do in your room. I’m a fan of yoga since it doesn’t require a lot of space. On my trip to Cinci, I did a Hotel Room Yoga workout I found on Yogaglo. Youtube is another great option for finding on-the-go workouts.

4. Run the city – Ask your hotel about local running routes and explore the city! My hotel pointed to a route than ran around the Great American Ballpark and through a little park along the Ohio river. It was the perfect place to complete Running with Ollie’s Virtual Run!

5. Stick to your routine – Stay on track by staying as close to your routine as you can. Your body is used to certain things like wake up times and eating patterns, so you’ll be in less of a travel daze if you try to maintain those habits. If possible, try to wake up and go to bed at the same times as you usually do. Try to eat at the same times as you usually do, as well. It may be tough if you’re in a drastically different time zone, but after a day or so you’re body should adjust.

6. Make healthy choices – This is probably the most difficult tip to stick to, especially if you’re on vacation, but try to make choices your body will thank you for. Squeeze in a workout before business meetings or a day on the beach. When out to eat, peruse the menu and find healthy options or ask for modifications. You can still enjoy local cuisine in a healthy way!
