How to Take Your Workout to the Nth Degree

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

I’ve been seriously lacking energy lately. I don’t know if it’s the shift back to regular altitude after Blend, the fact that it’s been dreary and rainy all week in NYC, or what, but I have some serious draggage happening. Yup, I just made up a word:

Watch out, Merriam Webster!

Point is, I needed a little boost to get me through my workouts this week, so I decided to try something new: Nth Degree.

The awesome folks (folks… is that a word I say in everyday life? I think that’s only a word I use on the blog… weird… whatevs I’m sticking with it!) at Nth Degree sent me a WHOLE CASE of their Sports Performance drink and  their Zero Cal sport water.

Thank goodness they arrived when they did. I had the opportunity to take a free 30/60/90 HIIT class at Equinox and needed something to carry me through.

I decided to test out the Blueberry Pomegranate Zero Cal Sport Water first.

I’m usually not a huge fan of flavored waters, but this was delicious!! It was such a refreshing treat during that crazy intense workout. Here I am, red in the face but enjoying the last of my water on the way home:

A co-worker of mine is on a low-carb kick right now, so I shared one with her and she was digging it. Plus, when she opened it up, we realized that Nth Degree does NOT skimp on the liquid per bottle-space ratio. This bottle was full to the brim!

I also had the Citrus Punch flavor as a little mid-morning treat the other day whilst getting in that work grind. That flavor is pretty good too, but I’m in love with the Blueberry Pomegranate!

A little info on Nth Degree Sport Water:

  • Great taste with no calories or carbs
  • Essential electrolytes, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sea salt
  • Vitamins B3, B5, B6, and B12
  • No artificial colors or dyes
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • No preservatives
  • Flavors: Mixed Berry, Citrus Punch, and Blueberry Pomegranate

Then it was time to give the Sports Performance Drink a go. I usually workout with no-calorie drinks (hence why I gave the Zero Cal drink a try first) but Nth Degree Performance Drink promises to give you natural energy, something I desperately needed this week.

Nth Degree doesn’t have any of the “bad-for-you-sugars,” so it gives you non-jittery energy without an impending crash. It uses only natural flavors, colors, and sweeteners, doesn’t have any preservatives, and is gluten-free. Win!

What is in it is a carb called Palatinose, which is derived from sugar beets. This is what sweetens the drink. Palatinose is fully, but more slowly digested, so it supplies the body with the full energy of carbs over a longer period of time. Sounds perfect for marathon training. Too bad I don’t have one in the works right now. Learn more about Palatinose here.

I knew I’d have to get in a challenging workout in order to really test the drink, so I dragged my butt out of bed, took a few sips of Nth Degree Performance in Fruit Punch and took it with me to the park for this workout:

“Box Jumps” Find a bench or step. Squat down and then spring up onto the step. Hop back down and repeat.
Step Up Lunges – Step the right leg back into a lunge with the left foot raised up on a curb. Balancing on the left leg, bring the right leg up to a 90 degree angle, knee bent. Return to lunch position. Repeat for 30 seconds, then switch legs.

Man, it was tough. The overcast day wasn’t a huge help on the motivation front, but the Nth Degree really did help! After each exercise, I was ready to take on the next. I could have kept going if I didn’t have to head home to get ready for work.

After a tough workout, I’m usually yawning in the shower, but I was still full of energy while getting myself all cleaned up for the office.

I gave my boyfriend a bottle of the Lemon Citrus flavor to test out, as well. He used it as a pre-workout drink and had a little more whilst lifting. Look at that stud (and his friend photo bombing in the back):

He said it definitely gave him energy, but he wasn’t digging the flavor – a little too tart for his taste buds. I haven’t tried this one yet, but I thought the Fruit Punch was pretty good. He also only had about half of the bottle but was still feeling the effects of the energy. I suppose that was a smart move since he works out after work and would have to go to bed a few hours later.

Some quick bullets on Nth Degree Performance:

  • features palatinose the “next generation sugar”
  • provides a more balanced glucose supply
  • B vitamins
  • provides a balance of electrolytes that can be lost in sweat
  • Flavors: Raspberry, Fruit Punch, Orange, Lemon Citrus

My overall take-away? I liked it. I will probably only use the Performance Drink for extra long or ridiculously tough workouts, (or if I decide to tackle another big race). The Zero Cal Sport Water is more my every-day speed. I haven’t gotten around to all the flavors yet, but if for some reason you can only try one, make it the Blueberry Pomegranate!

Learn more about Nth Degree here, and follow them on Instagram! They’re having a contest right now where you can win a 6-month supply of the Performance Drink. All you have to do is follow them (@nth4u) and regram their photo with #NthDegree.
