Himalaya 2011: First Cell Phone Call From Summit Of Everest

By Kungfujedi @Kungfujedi
Last week I posted a story about British climber Kenton Cool reaching the summit of Everest for the 9th time, and then promptly using his Samsung smartphone to send a tweet about his success. While that wasn't the first tweet ever sent from the summit as was widely reported (Eric Larsen did it last fall!), Kenton did manage to place the first cell phone call from the top of the world, which you can watch in the video below.
Cool used the same Samsung smartphone that he tweeted from to call home to his wife, and while I gave him a bit of a ribbing for plugging his sponsor's gear while tweeting, the genuine emotion that he feels when talking to his wife makes it clear that he really does appreciate the ability to use a cell phone to hear her voice. You would think that after nine successful trips up the mountain, he wouldn't be so affected by the climb, but clearly it is still a very moving thing for him, and to be able to share it with his wife was pretty special.
