Ever have one of those days where you just don't want to think about making anything? You have no creative energy and even though your fridge is stocked, you have no idea what to make. Even something as simple as a smoothie can feel daunting.

As much as I love to cook and come up with new recipes, days like this happen often. Luckily, there are a lot of new services out there that do all thinking for you, and I'm here to introduce you to one of them: Green Blender.

Green Blender is a smoothie delivery company based in NYC. They send you all the pre-portioned ingredients and superfoods (all locally sourced and 100% vegan) to make 10 12-oz smoothies (5 smoothies - 2 servings each). You literally just dump everything into your blender, add ice and tada - it's smoothie time! Each recipe includes a synopsis of all the nutrients the smoothie has and what category the smoothie falls into (high protein, glow, energy, detox, immune boosting, low calorie, anti-flammatory and calm). Most smoothies fall into more than one category, so you can really choose the right one for the moment. Say, for instance, you want a post-workout concoction. You can peruse through the recipes in your Green Blender box and choose one that is high-protein and anti-inflammatory. Perfection.

I tore into my box when it arrived, and got to blending! Here's a peek at the smoothies that came in my box. (if you don't want the blend-by-blend, you can skip to the pros and cons summary below).

Cinnamon Rice and Everything Nice

This smoothie had a very light, just slightly sweet flavor. It had pear and lucuma (two things I've never had in a smoothie), and a combo of avocado, rice milk, and hemp seeds gave this smoothie a creamy, milkshake-like consistency. I topped mine with Love Grown Raisin Almond Crunch Oat Clusters (YUM!).

Pineapple Coconut Energizer

This guy was filled with Vitamin C, manganese and fiber (thanks to the pineapple and chia seeds). The avocado and coconut made this nice and creamy, but I wasn't a fan of the pulp from the orange. Texture aside, it tasted great!

I had a feeling I was going to like this smoothie from reading the recipe, and it didn't let me down. It had hemp protein, gluten-free oats, almond butter, apple, banana and spinach - a complete meal in a glass! I downed this bad boy after a long run since it fell into the high-protein and energy categories - just what I needed after 10 miles!

Superfruit Fresh Start

This smoothie made for the perfect breakfast. It had orange, carrots, kiwi, cashews and pomegranate powder, which sounds like such a delicious combo! The flavor was light, but pretty tasty. Since I learned from the Pineapple Coconut Energizer smoothie that I didn't like the orange pulp, I squeeze the orange juice into this one vs. blending the whole fruit. Much better in terms of texture.

Not going to lie, I was hesitant to try this one. I am NOT a fan of cilantro and some of the other ingredients ( reishi mushroom powder and squash) sounded a bit odd to have in a smoothie. I didn't want to waste all the ingredients, though, and I do like trying new things, so I decided to give this smoothie a shot - just sans cilantro. It was alright. It tasted more like a gazpacho to me than a smoothie, but it was still a nice, light way to start the morning.

Pros:

  • pre-portioned ingredients make whipping up a smoothie a cinch
  • makes eating healthier easier
  • all ingredients are locally sourced, organic and 100% vegan
  • allows you to try things you may not normally try
  • makes enough smoothie for 2 people or one giant one for yourself!
  • includes nutrition facts for each smoothie
  • you can pause your subscription at any time

Cons:

  • you may get ingredients you don't like (I'm looking at you, cilantro)
  • you can't adjust the box if you have allergies

Overall, I really enjoyed my Green Blender experience and would definitely order from them again. I like that it forces me outside of my typical smoothie comfort zone.
