Goat Yoga Is a Thing & Here’s Why You Should Try It

I almost can't believe I'm typing these words, but yes, Goat Yoga is a thing. And I'm going to cut right to the chase: it's amazing. Or should I say NAHH-mazing!

Let me rewind.

Back in December, my friend Gabrielle texted me asking me if I wanted to do goat yoga in January. I think I let out a squeal of excitement. I replied with a simple and somehow understated "omg yes," and everyday after that I woke up a little more excited that I was a day closer to goat yoga.

What is goat yoga?

It's exactly what it sounds like. Yoga. With goats. Baby goats roam around as an instructor takes you through a yoga flow. A few goat wranglers are handy to help shepherd the goats around the class and clean up any... errrm... messes these cute kids might leave on your mat. The goats wander around, stroll under your down dog, and will even balance on your back.

How did this become a thing?

ATX Goat Yoga started our as a novelty to help raise money for dogs who needed homes (animals helping animals - what could be better?). It quickly became clear that people got so much joy out of the classes, that they became a more regular occurrence.

Tell me about the goats!

They're the cutest things in the world. They don't mind being held and they LOVE to eat grass, shoe laces and bag handles. The class I took had several Nigerian Dwarf Goats, one of which was only 3 weeks old!

Why should I try goat yoga?

Do you really need an answer. I mean. It's yoga with goats! But honestly, this class will fill you with so much joy and happiness.

I will say, it's not the most challenging or relaxing yoga class (though one baby goat did fall asleep on a girl's lap), but it is probably the most fun yoga class you'll ever take.

It's also the perfect yoga class for beginners. I'd equate Goat Yoga to a fun run-the Color Run of the yoga world.

Your balance will be tested as goats run around you. You'll DEFINITELY get distracted by their adorableness. I probably spend over half of the glass like this:

It will relieve your stress like any good yoga class should, and you will undoubtably exercise your smile muscles. Your core might even hurt from an abundance of laughter. Goat yoga will lift your spirits and soothe your soul.

And if nothing else, it gives you a fun story to tell.

Would I do goat yoga again? In a heartbeat! Though I may just need to adopt my own goat so I can do it all the time. I live in Texas after all. Plus, I think Moose needs a brother. Don't you?

If you live in the Austin area, be sure to check out ATX Goat Yoga, and let me know if you book a class. I'll join you!
