My first race in over seven months is coming up this weekend! I haven't gone that long without racing in a very long time. While it's been kind of nice to not be in constant training mode (especially as I've been adjusting to my first year in a new city), I'm excited to experience the excitement of race day agin.
I'm also excited because this isn't just any old race, it's a racecation! My friend Jess and I will be meeting in Charlotte to run a small race down there: Race 13.1.
We'd been looking for a good Fall race for a while and wanted something that wasn't too far from either of us (she's in New York City). We wanted a time and place where the weather would be nice, and we wanted a city neither of us had ever been to. After a bunch of research, we decided on this half marathon in Charlotte!
Since I knew my training would be going on right smack in the middle of summer in Texas, I knew I wasn't going to be able to train for this race like I have in the past, so I decided to give Jeff Galloway's Run/Walk method a try. It's been serving me well so far, and I think it will do wonders for helping me hit my goals.
Speaking of which...
GOAL #1: Don't race for time
Yep. When I started training, I wasn't sure if I'd be running this race for time. After only training in 80+ degree weather and 80%+humidity, I definitely won't be running for time. I'm also running this race with a friend, so I want to enjoy the race with her.
GOAL #2: Stick to my run/walk intervals
The adrenaline of race day may make me want to ditch the walking and go-go-go, but that's not how I trained. Ain't nobody want to set herself up for injury. I also want to make sure I have enough energy after the race to explore the city, which is exactly what run/walk will help me do.
GOAL #3: Take pictures
Running is the best way to explore a new city, right? Since I'm not running this race for time, I want to spend time taking in the sights during the race and stop and take some pictures!
GOAL #4: Have fun!
This is a goal of mine at every race, regardless of how hard I'll be pushing (or not pushing!). If I can smile and enjoy each mile, the race is a success in my book!
