Five Inexpensive Halloween Costume Ideas

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Happy Halloween and happy Friday! I love when holidays fall on the weekends. You don’t have to deal with that do we celebrate the weekend before or the weekend after dilemma.

Before we get into this fun Friday Five Post, I want to extend good wishes and happy running vibes to everyone that will be running the NYC Marathon this weekend! I’ll be cheering for you between miles 8 and 9 in Brooklyn!

Ok back to today – Halloween!! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. It’s just so much fun! I love dressing up and seeing all the creative costumes out there, so I thought I’d take this Friday Five to share some of my favorite inexpensive costume ideas from years past. Take a look and get inspired for next year (or this year if you’re a last minute gal/guy) and don’t forget to check out all the other Friday Five posts linked up with Mar, Courtney, & Cynthia.

Five Inexpensive Halloween Costume Ideas

1. Clue Characters! Grab a group of friends and be the characters from Clue! Most of us hunted around the Salvation Army for costume components. I was Ms. Peacock and somehow made my dress with a combo of fabric, hot glue, velcro, and lots of double-sided sticky tape, and got my weapon (the rope) from Home Depot. Not gonna lie, I think I creeped the Home Depot employee out when I asked, “Excuse me sir, can you tell me where I can get about 3 feet of rope?”

2. Smurfs – All this costume required was a white t-shirt, blue leggings, a hat (which my boyfriend made) and a boat load of blue body paint. Note to self: never do body paint again, especially when the forecast for Halloween is snow… blue body paint. everywhere. except for my body…

3. Mario Kart. This is a fun costume to do solo or with a group. I made a little cart out of a cardboard box and pie-tins and zoomed my way around the city. I may or may not have left a few banana peels in my wake…

4. The Leg Lamp from a Christmas Story. - This costume was made approximately 5 minutes before the party I hosted. I bought a lamp from Home Depot (that place is seriously a Halloween super store) and some fabric (I couldn’t find fringe at the last minute whomp whomp) to glue to the bottom and make straps. Then all you need is some balancing skills for photos. My boyfriend was the box the lamp came in.

5. I was planning on spending a lot of time this year creating this costume. But alas, time go that best of me. Instead, I’m throwing together a Tinker Bell costume (lookout for pictures on my social channels). I might have to repurpose it for my next Disney race!
