City to Summit in a Day

By Rob Howard @adventurenet
City to Summit in a DayAs expected the Rat Race City to Summit triathlon was an epic day for all concerned - starting with a 5am briefing at the waterside between the two Forth Bridges and finishing close to 2am on the following morning at the foot of Ben Nevis for those doing the one day event.
The sea swim was 1200m (shortened due to the colder than normal water temperatures), the ride was 112 miles through the Highlands and the run 26.2 miles up and down Ben Nevis (and some other hills!). There was the option to do it all in one go, or camp overnight and leave the run till Sunday.
There was a great buzz about the whole event and some inspirational performances, and the weather helped too.  It was mostly fine on Saturday, though a head wind and some heavy showers made the cycle ride harder for the competitors, then Sunday was a glorious day.
It certainly made this photographers life easier for a continuous 22 hour photo shoot on Saturday. On Sunday Ben Nevis was a very pleasant to sit for the day - and I've rarely said that!  There was pleasant sunshine and just enough breeze to keep the midges down ... the only problem was staying awake while waiting for the runners!
I'll organize a report and gallery for SleepMonsters shortly, but for now all the photos are on www.randrphotos.co.uk if you want to take a look.
