Your Body’s A Picky Kid

FABULOUS FEBRUARY Fun February Facts: Feb 6th saw the US and France sign the Treaty of Alliance and Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1778, signaling the official recognition of the new republic, in 1959 Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments filed the first patent for an integrated circuit and in 1756, the famous dueler Aaron Burr was born (here's the great Aaron Burr milk commercial).

Ok, on to picky kids...

Your Body’s A Picky Kid

Think about a picky kid. He or she likes what they like and that's the way they want because they have gotten used to and are comfortable with things a certain way and see no good reason to change it.

What happens when you try something different or new?

They rebel.

Can you really blame them? Wouldn't you be a little miffed if you got used to the world being a certain way and then all of a sudden your world got changed?

Now think about your body. We let it get used to what it gets used to and a result it becomes, for lack of a better word, a little "picky". What do we think would happen when we change something, i.e. stop eating bread, sugar, coffee or start exercising a bunch? It's gonna be a little ticked off and it's probably going to rebel. Just like a picky kid, our body gets used to what we get used to and that's what we expect. If we don't get it, we rebel.

What happens when we change something for a picky kid?

Change it for one instance (i.e. meal) and they will rebel and throw a tantrum or just might turn their head at you. Change it for a day and they will be cranky and whine and/or ignore you out of anger. Change it for a few days and they get a little more willing to adapt (particularly when it comes to eating as picky kids get a lot less picky the more hungry they get). They might even stay a little ornery for a while but eventually if the change becomes the new norm, they just have to get used to it and eventually they will.

Picky kids, just like picky bodies, are simply adapting to their environment and trying to maximize their experience in life. When you change one of your behaviors expect a backlash or rebellion from your body at the beginning but keep it changed and it will eventually adapt, even if it acts a little cranky for a while, which it likely will. Treat your body as you would a picky kid and there will be a point when it gives in and adjusts to the new normal. Don't expect it to be easy but expect to be able to win if you're committed to the change.

Warning- If you give in to a picky kid or picky body throwing a metaphorical tantrum because you are changing something it will only strengthen its resolve and cross its arms harder the next time you try to change something on it. You don't have to be mean about it, just stay consistent and calm. I've always thought as a kid gets hungrier they get a lot less picky. Your body isn't that different.

Thanks for reading, have a great day!

P.S. You could also swap "spoiled" for picky and get the same basic concept.
