When we were in Washington DC a few weeks ago visiting my cousin and his girlfriend we wanted to something a little less touristy at least one of the days. Greg and Tina had never been to any of the local wineries and we thought it would be a great way to spend a cooler than average Sunday.
It was about an hour and a half from the Dupont Circle area of DC out to Loudon County and the many wineries. We decided to go slow with a goal of only visiting 3-4 wineries. We wanted to enjoy our day, the wine and pick out favorite to sit down and have some cheese/meat and a bottle.
Thankfully my cousin Greg and his girlfriend are our kind of travelers, just go and have fun. No need to stick to a schedule 24/7. Our first stop was Breaux, with my favorites being the Viognier and the Nebbiolo. Of course I pick the most expensive on the list at $38 a bottle.

Next up was our favorite of the day by far, Doukenie, we actually went for a tasting and went back for a bottle at the end of the day. The woman pouring was fantastic! She took the time to talk about each wines and really went into detail. Something none of the wineries did!

Winery #3 was so unmemorable that I didn’t take a single picture or remember the name. We didn’t love the wine and it was a very rushed tasting. It’s probably a good thing I don’t remember the name

Winery #4 was Sunset Hills, very popular with the locals. The wine was decent, the atmosphere very quaint and we met some interesting people who had quite the time making fun of us Minnesotans even though they were confused why we didn’t have that accent. Seriously, that is one my biggest pet peeves about what people think of Minnesota. One- I didn’t grow up here and don’t have the accent. Two- Most people here don’t that accent!

Because of the fantastic service we had at Doukenie we want back there and ordered a bottle of Petit Verdot to share, bought bread, cheese and crackers and sat in their beautiful space and just enjoyed the day.

Thanks to Greg and Tina for showing us such a great “non touristy” part of the area. We had a blast!
