Summary:
The Urban Decay Ammo eyeshadow palette was the first palette I ever got from Urban Decay. I had wanted so many Urban Decay products for a long time before I bought this back in 2008, but I was always put off a little bit by the cost. Urban Decay isn’t ridiculously expensive – this palette set me back £22, but I wouldn’t spend that much on a whim. I really wanted to think about how practical this set would be, if the colours came out nicely, if they would last etc., so I did do some research before buying it.
The main reason I bought this set is because I think it has a lot of really wearable colours. The pale browns and pinks and the gold are perfect for day time; they are subtle and warm, with a slight sparkle to make them stand out. The black, ‘oil slick’, is good for finishing up the corner of the eye to add a little definition too. I also found that the green ‘mildew’, blue ‘shattered’, purple ‘last call’ and white ‘polyester bride’ work well as subtle eyeliners for brightening up the eye area. The purple, white and pink ‘grifter’ especially are really good at making eyes look brighter and less tired, without looking garish or like you have an eye infection. They are very complementary colours which is great because I do prefer more subtle shades – it’s unlikely that I’ll ever wear a blue eyeshadow, but wetting a thin eyeliner brush has a really nice contrast against my gray eyes.
Urban Decay are known for good quality ingredients and this eyeshadow set isn’t an exception. The palette contains 10 x 0.08g eyeshadows and a double ended applicator. I prefer to use a brush as I think it’s easier to be more precise, but it’s not bad and it does the job. The eyeshadows are all shimmery which are well pigmented, but the black and white are also glittery which I don’t like because they don’t apply very smoothly and they feel rough on application. I also don’t like the look of the glitter on my eye lids as I think it looks odd, and when I blink I could see sparkles in my eyes. The other colours feel smooth and they blend really well, and the color you see in the palette is just a tiny bit darker than how it appears on your skin. They last for several hours too, but they do noticeably fade after about 6-8 hours. I think this is why they come with a primer, but I’ve never used it.
I like the set as a whole – I like the colours and the packaging. It’s a matte black cardboard box with felt and foil patterns on the front, a large mirror inside, and closes with a magnet. It feels like it could handle being knocked around and I can confirm that it certainly can take a battering! I do like this set, and I think it’s one where I use most of the colours, but there are always a couple I don’t use. I think it’d be nice to have some matte eyeshadows too to make it more versatile, but otherwise I’m really happy with it.
