Up-and-Coming Michelin Star Worthy Chefs in the UK – Guest Post

By Slimshoppin @slimshoppin

One of the ways to tell if you’re eating at one of the top restaurants in the world is if it’s been rated by the Michelin Guide. This guide, which is the oldest restaurant guide in Europe, sends its anonymous reviewers to restaurants. They do not reveal who they are or their connection to Michelin at all. After eating, they write a review for the Michelin Guide and give the restaurant one, two, or three stars. A three-star restaurant is considered the absolute best. If a restaurant gains an extra star between issues of the guide, their business can greatly increase. Likewise, a restaurant that loses a star may find many of its tables empty.Note that Michelin doesn’t actually cover all restaurants in the world, only those which fall in the areas where reviewers currently live.

Michelin Starred Chefs in the UK

Finding a one-star chef in the UK is fairly easy—in 2013, there were 138 different UK restaurants that had received a one-star review. Two-star restaurants are a bit harder to find: only 20 have received this distinction. When it comes to three-star reviews on the Michelin Guide, you’ll find only four. One of these is owned by Gordon Ramsey, the well-known host of several reality TV cooking shows. In fact, between all of the restaurants he has owned, Ramsey has earned a total of 15 stars. Another top Michelin-star earner in the UK is the retired chef Marco Pierre White, who was the first British chef to achieve the coveted three-star rating.

Some Up and Coming Chefs to Watch

Flaming Barbecues has conducted research to find which UK chefs are on the rise and on their way to Michelin Star-dom. There are a number of different chefs you’ll want to keep an eye on. Some of the two-star restaurants may earn that third star fairly soon, while some restaurants that haven’t made the list might receive their first. Here are a few of the chefs that may be moving up the Michelin Guide. They’re definitely serving more than your average barbecue.

Simon Rogan– Rogan’s flagship restaurant is L’Enclume, and it currently holds two stars. In 2013, he remodeled the French, the restaurant located in the Midland Hotel in Manchester, and critics expect it to earn its first Michelin star very soon.

Marc Wilkinson– Owner of the Fraiche, a one-star restaurant, has been praised by many as serving better food than some two- and three-star restaurants. It’s a very small restaurant, however, so if you’re planning on eating at Fraiche, be sure to put in your reservation several weeks in advance.

Stosie Madi– She may own what is more or less a country pub, but the Parker’s Arms draws people from all over the area. Some will make the hour drive from Manchester just to eat there. Many of her fruits and vegetables are grown right near the restaurant, too.

Brett Graham – A transplanted Australian now living in London, Graham is the head chef at The Ledbury. Under Graham’s leadership, The Ledbury received its first Michelin star is just nine months. What makes this accomplishment even more incredible is that it was Graham’s first time as a head chef.

These are just four of the up-and-coming chefs in the UK.Check out their restaurants if you’re in the area. You won’t regret it.
