Tracking Sleep with Jawbone UP24

By Fitnspicy @fitnspicy

Today, I’m partnering with Jawbone to talk about sleep. I’ve written about my issues with sleep on the blog a few times. I’ve never been a great sleeper (you can even ask my Mom that) and I am constantly waking up each night and never feel like I am getting deep sleep or enough sleep. While I know that I am pretty active; even though I sit most of the day at work, I know sleep is a huge issue for me. I’ve gone to the doctor for a sleep study, I’ve taken pills (which I hate), I have a routine, I’ve added more activity. The list could go on and on.

When I was offered the opportunity to check out the Jawbone UP24, I knew I wanted to try it out for the sleep tracking. I wanted to know what the heck was going on with me. I selected the UP24 which syncs with my phone via Bluetooth and tracks my daily activity, workouts and sleep. After browsing all the colors I knew I wanted the persimmon, hello closest color to orange, and I got a size small because I have pretty small wrists. I love how it looks. My one complaint? I wish it showed you the number of steps you’ve taken on the display.

It’s been on my wrist since last Tuesday and I have to say I really like it. You signup for an account in the app and input all your data ensuring you have accurate information. During a workout you can start the timing so the app knows what you are doing (I keep forgetting to do this) and to put it into sleep mode you hold the button on the bracelet until it vibrates.

Here is a snapshot of my activity yesterday, we were driving home from Omaha and spent most of the day in the car. When we got home and I had all of our luggage put away I knew I needed to get a workout in. I did a Turbofire HIIT DVD and used my PiYo slides with the full body strength workout. You can see the spike in activity and that helped me meet my goal for the day.

And my sleep last night…Eh. Is was I have to say about that. I went to bed early because it had been such a busy weekend and ended up staying in bed of for an extra 30 minutes because I was so tired. Why? I only got 2 hours of sound sleep. Light sleep accounted for most of the night and I was awake for about an hour and a half. Waking up and not falling asleep is a huge problem for me. I lay in bed and try every trick I know:

  • Counting backwards
  • Tightening muscles and relaxing
  • Writing down what is on my mind
  • Getting a drink of water

Last night none of it was working. I am really feeling that lack of sleep today!

My goal over the next month is to increase the amount of sound sleep to be at least half. I feel like this is a realistic goal! I will be checking back in with my progress over the next month. Wish me luck.

Disclosure: I was sent a Jawbone UP24 to try and write about my experiences and will be compensated for my posts.
