Like many Prohibition Era cocktails the T.N.T. Cocktail recipe is simple as can be and is a great way to gussy up low quality Canadian Whisky and mask some of the cloying nature it carries. Even when it comes to better quality Canadian Whisky, Absinthe is a great compliment to it and adds a wonderful bit of herbal anise to accompany the overall sweetness of most Great White North distillate.
The original recipe suggests that you shake the ingredients with ice, but modern bar tending practices would say that you stir the two together with ice. After making it both ways I’m of the mind that it really doesn’t matter and the only major difference I noted between the two executions was the more frothy / airy texture to the drink from shaking instead of stirring. The taste, as you’d expect, was virtually the same.
