What separates the victorious from the non-victorious, many times, is the ability to bounce back from adversity. We call it resilience. And if greatness is your goal, adversity is something you better get used to.
Adversity is something I’ve had regularly in my life, bouncing back from injuries and illnesses, as well as my baby brother’s death. So adversity is a part of life.
How you handle adversity, however, determines how you interpret it. How you interpret adversity can make or break you.
What do I mean?
Sometimes life can hit you so hard and so fast that you may begin to think that life is happening to you…that there is a dark cloud hanging over your head all the time. Though none of this is true, it’s hard to see it any other way when you’re going through hell.
Here’s the truth…adversity is like fire. Fire refines you by burning away all that no longer serve you (thoughts, beliefs, suppressed emotions) so your greatest self can emerge.
When you don’t know or forget that truth, fire can destroy you, consume you, or tear you down. And even though you came into the world with all the wisdom you needed to succeed, the best of you emerges through the training grounds of adversity.
I remember when I had trouble seeing this truth for myself. I regarded myself as tough, able to push down my pain and hurt to keep moving forward. Eventually, emotional suppression stopped working for me.
Racism on the job, coping with past emotional abuse, and perceived failures and missteps all took its toll on me. Suffering was an everyday thing for me.
My life fell apart and it seemed like I was facing challenge after challenge until my body broke down. That was a big wake up call for me to listen to Spirit and do something differently.
One thing the Creator told me was that ‘your life is happening for you. You’re creating all this stress because you’re stressed within. It’s time to let all that go, discover your purpose and value so you can live the life you’re here to live. As you heal, you will discover your purpose.’
Later in my recovery process, I learned one simple thing that took me from victim to victor: You come encoded with your purpose, your reason for creation…and you attract all the opportunities, challenges, situations, and people to fully birth that purpose.
Understanding my purpose pulled all the pieces together for me.
That’s when I really got it: I wasn’t being punished or picked on, and I wasn’t unlucky or doomed to fail. I was being prepped to carry out my life’s work. And it was during the lowest point in my life where I discovered that I was being developed…on purpose.
I rose victoriously out of bondage to freedom, and now I know the true definition of victory.
This is the purpose of adversity…to help shape you into the fierce, powerful, courageous Queen you’re meant to be so you can live successfully, fulfilled, and rich. Things don’t happen to you, it happens for you and by you.
You’re always the creatress of your life, even in the craziest and weakest of moments.
