The Makeup Show LA 2013 Recap

In it’s 5th year, The Makeup Show LA  proved to be bigger and better than ever. Over 4,500 attendees walked through the doors, along with 75 brands and 30 speakers. While I should have been lying on my death bed this past weekend, I was actually walking around The Makeup Show, shopping and listening to the amazing lineup of keynotes they had on schedule this year.

The first keynote I watched was Sam Fine. It was such an amazing experience to watch the master work! Sam’s great energy and lightheartedness made his keynote one of my favorites of the weekend. He worked on his model’s skin for the entire hour of his demo, and I was captivated the whole time.

Next, Johnny Lavoy and Billy B talked about the importance of having a makeup family. They were joined onstage by surprise guest Michelle Visage. The entire keynote was funny, down to earth and extremely informative. Billy B told stories and the others made fun of him. I always love listening to what he has to say.

Beautylish put on a great keynote about the importance of social media, and they outlined ways for us to incorporate the tools ourselves. Michael Devellis and Crystal Wright schooled the audience on the industry and gave everyone amazing career advice, as usual.

On Sunday, I did most of my shopping. I had to stop by NARS’ booth since I’m obsessed. I also picked up some Bdellium Tools brushes, a Senna contour kit, Alcone sponges, lashes, and some MUFE refills. I kept it under control this year. My kit is heavy enough.

The keynote speakers on Sunday were fantastic. Makeup artist, Lois Burwell (Braveheart, Princess Bride, Saving Private Ryan) gave the lowdown on working in film. Her talk was so humble and inspiring. I am not a film makeup artist so I was fascinated by her knowledge and information.

Lastly, my favorite keynote of the weekend was Mathu Anderson’s. It was a little bit off the wall, but the man is a genius. He demoed a drag look on his model which is what I was hoping he’d do. It didn’t disappoint! He showed us his famous cut crease and fade brow techniques.

 As always, it was a fast paced, fun filled weekend. Can’t wait for next year!
