The Evolution of My Hair

By Heathernichole
When I was little I had curly blonde hair. When I was in preschool my hair started to grow out dark so I had the ombré thing going on WAY before it was a trend. I like my hair darker but I prefer it with some blonde in it. My mom has always liked my hair long. I think it’s because her dad never let her grow her hair out. She rarely let me cut my hair when I was growing up. I remember in sixth grade she asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I said, “A haircut.” She let me cut it but she always let me know she preferred it long. I was three in the photo below.

The summer before eighth grade my mom asked me if I wanted to get highlights. Of course I said yes! I’ve been dying my hair since then. Yes, that is Andrew Keegan. That was probablythe best night of my life (until I met my fiancé). And tomorrow is his birthday so Happy Birthday, Andrew!!!
The Evolution of My Hair
Between eighth grade and college I went from long hair to short hair and from brunette to blonde and back to brunette again. My hair was completely unhealthy from all the coloring and because I blew dried it and styled it daily. I was in college here and as you can see I was on the heavier side. Those bangs did not help my face look any thinner. My mom looks gorgeous as always.

In 2010 I was at my heaviest and I’m pretty sure my hair was the longest it had ever been. Looking back, I think I was hiding behind my hair. I would love to take another photo with Miranda and do a side by side comparison. We’ve both lost quite a bit of weight.

I started getting highlights again in 2011 and I loved it. I really do prefer myself as a blonde.
The Evolution of My Hair
I couldn’t tell you why now but I went back to brunette again at the end of 2011. I think I may have gotten tired of roots and paying for touch ups. This was January of 2012 and I was extremely tempted to chop my hair off. I was running in the mornings and I was getting tired of spending so much time on my hair. I knew it would be easier to just cut it.

Later that same month I took the plunge.

My mom pretty much cried and she begged me to keep the hair. She was so upset.
The Evolution of My Hair
I felt bad but I loved my new hair! I no longer felt the need to hide behind long hair. This was me at my lowest weight. My goal is to get back there.
The Evolution of My Hair
If someone were to ask me to pick my favorite hairstyle on myself this would be it. I absolutely loved my hair in 2012. I would let it dry naturally. It was so easy and fun. I constantly think about going back to this style.

I was heavily influenced by Jennifer Nettles during that time.
The Evolution of My Hair
This was Christmas of 2012. I was letting my hair grow out and I was back to blonde.
The Evolution of My Hair
I had just met my fiancé and he mentioned to me in a nice way that he preferred brunettes so I dyed my hair back for him.
The Evolution of My Hair
Nearly two years later and my hair is officially the longest it’s ever been. My mom tells me how beautiful it is all the time. My fiancé and I compromised and I added blonde to the ends last summer. I’m growing my hair out for our wedding. I’m taking extra vitamins and I try to go three or four days without washing it to keep it healthy. I swear, dry shampoo is a gift from God. I’d like to cut my hair after the wedding but I’m pretty sure my mom and my fiancé would not allow that to happen. My fiancé says if I cut my hair he’ll shave his head…he knows how much I love his long wavy hair.

I would really like to add more blonde before the wedding. I LOVE the way this looks. (Photo from Pinterest)

My fiancé says he prefers this look but I feel like t hat’s exactly what my hair looks like now.

Maybe I’ll just head to the salon and add more blonde and see if he even notices. Hehe!
