The Difference Between Day and Night Creams // Do I Need Both?

By Makemeupmandy @mandywebb28

I have been asked this question before about the difference between day creams and night creams. Is there a significant difference between them? Is it just some money-making scam to make women think they need one for day, one for night when really, there isn’t a marked difference at all? Do you really need both?

The Dr. Lewinn’s Line Smoothing Complex S8 Day and Night Creams landed on my desk recently so I thought I’d use them as a little case study for this purpose.

The differences at a glance…

Purpose:

The names themselves give you a little idea of their focus. The day cream is focused on “hydrating” while the night cream has a focus on “double intensity”. This is due to the different needs i.e. in the day, we are exposed to pollution and other environmental elements while night is the time when our skin does its restoring, repairing and recovery.

Texture:

The day cream is a lot more lightweight with a thinner consistency compared to the night cream. The night cream is significantly thicker and by comparison, greasier than the day cream.

Key Ingredients:

The day cream contains Hydro-Boost Micropatch which is a “unique delivery system that allows the slow release of Serine molecules throughout the day for optimal hydration”. Key ingredients are comparatively more targeted at providing intense and continuous hydration.

The night cream contains an impressive blend of 13 powerful ingredients purely targeted at nourishment. This makes sense given that our skin could use a good boost during the hard work of repairing and recovery through the night.

They both contain Acetyl Glutamyl Heptapeptide-1 (Snap-8), which they say is an alternative to Botox, and Sodium Hyaluronate which is for intense hydration.

To use one or both?

Firstly, I’ll say yes there is a significant difference between day and night creams. They have been made with the different needs in mind and are meant to target those specific needs.

Put it this way: nothing bad is going to happen if you use a day cream at night or vice versa.

Personally, I feel it boils down to your personal choice and your skincare needs. It’s similar to how some women swear by serums yet some completely skip it and feel that their skin does not need or does not significantly benefit from them. If you have younger skin, you might find it unnecessary for the use of two different creams which is fair enough. For me, I am barreling towards the 30 and starting to see the signs of aging (wrinkles, laugh lines) on my skin. Not to mention I tend to suffer from dry, flaky skin so I will be sticking to my skincare regime of using the both the day cream and night cream.

Do you use both day and night creams?
