In honor of National Lipstick Day, I wanted to do a lipstick themed post. Since it is summer, I figured it would be best to talk about my favorite summer time lip colors. I was going to do a top 5, but that was too complicated. I tried to include a wide variety of brands, finishes, and colors so there should be something for everyone.
I meant to have this up yesterday, but I didn't expect to be so time consuming. I already wanted to do this post anyway, so the "holiday: gave me a little extra push. Plus I tried out a little something different with the pictures. I hope you like it!
My first pick is actually a lipgloss, but I reach for it all the time. Buxom's Lip Polish in Kristen doesn't have much color, but it adds gorgeous shine and it has a slight plumping effect. Another reason it is perfect for summer is due to the cooling effect it has. It feels refreshing on a hot day and it is easy to slap on for any occasion. It also feels very hydrating, it isn't sticky. and it stays on better than most glosses.
The second one is technically a lip balm, but Cover Girl's Oh Sugar balms offer a nice twist. First of all, they smell incredible. It is similar to the sugary citrus scent of the Fresh Lip Balms. The particular shade I am talking about is Gumdrop. It looks dark in the tube, but it is a gorgeous sheer berry. I can see this being a good transition shade between summer and fall. But the best part of this product is the formula and pigment. It feels extremely hydrating and it has a lot of slip, but it doesn't melt off of the lips immediately. If you have dry lips and still want a nice pop of color, check these out.
Maybelline's new Loaded Bolds lipstick line is one of the best lipsticks, and not just out of those sold at the drugstores. They have the smoothest formula that applies better than most of the lipsticks I have ever tried. Rebel Pink is one of my favorites because of its vibrant color and staying power. It doesn't dry out my lips, despite having a matte finish. Be warned, though. It stains and can be a pain to remove. If you haven't tried this line, you absolutely must. Stay away from the violet shades, though. I have heard through the grapevine that they are not so great.
NYX's Lip Lustre Glossy Tint in Retro Socialite is a new product that already has some mixed reviews. Personally, I love it. It is very unique in that applies more like a gloss and retains the shine for a couple of hours. After that, it becomes a gorgeous stain that retains its color payoff and looks even. The texture is unique...almost gel like in a sense. Like the Buxom lip glosses, it has a cooling sensation, although it is much more subdued in the Lip Lustres. Retro Socialite is a gorgeous bright pink that will stay put all day. The only reason for a touch up is to restore the glossy finish.
I am not a fan of orange lip colors, but Ciate's Liquid Velvet in the shade Risque has converted me. It has just enough red in it for me to like it. It is certainly bright and bold, so it isn't for the timid. The formula is one of my favorites for liquid lipsticks. It doesn't feel too drying nor does it accentuate any dry patches. Just be sure to check your teeth before walking out the door.
My next pick still has a coral tint to it, but it is a fantastic everyday color if you don't want to use a nude lipstick. Anastasia Beverly Hills recently added Dolce to their line up and I am so very glad they did. I have been wearing it constantly since I bought it earlier this month. I love her liquid lipsticks because she has a great variety of color, they last all day with fading in the center of my lips, and they are not too drying. Plus I don't have to build up the color and it doesn't flake. This is a great color to have in your collection on days you don't want a bold lip. but still want just a little bit of color.
Jordana's Sweet Cream Matte Lip Color in Strawberry Cheesecake is another "everyday" lip color favorite. Like Dolce, it adds some color without being too in your face. It does have more color than Dolce, and it has more of a pink tone to it. The Jordana Sweet Cream Matte Lip Colors are among the best budget friendly liquid lipsticks.
Up next is ColourPop's Ultra Satin Lip in The Rabbit, which is not your typical shade of pink. There are two things that make this color special: the formula and the blue reflect throughout. The Ultra Satin Lips have the wear time of a matte liquid lipstick, but have a nice, satin finish. No dry lips with these. The blue reflects add a stunning visual interest to this shade, which makes it stand out amongst any other fuschias you may have in your collection. Plus it is only $6. Can't beat that.
The next two colors are for the more daring. While they are bold and a little intimidating, they are very fun to play around with.
The first is Kat Von D's Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in the shade L.U.V. This color is a bold violet that will add an extreme pop of color to any look. The only downside to this shade is that it isn't as opaque as her other shades in this line. It is still gorgeous, though.
N.Y.X's Liquid Suede in Jet Set makes L.U.V look like an everyday color. This rich navy isn't a shade that I am going to use often, but it is a lot of fun to have around for the 4th of July. It also makes a lovely eyeliner. The formula is actually very good, which is hard to find for bold shades like this. It is opaque and it applies smoothly and evenly.
I have been wearing all 10 of these throughout the spring and summer. Even though I love all of these, I am ready for the darker, vampy shades of fall.
What are some of your favorite lipsticks for the summer?
