Summary:
I was lucky (not sure if that’s the right word) enough to receive a sample of the Maybelline Fit Me foundation. As you can see in the picture I was sent the Nude Beige 125 shade which is the second lightest of the 12 that are on offer. The first 4 shades are for light skin tones, the middle 4 are for medium skin tones and the last 4 are for those with darker skin tones. The shades come with pink and yellow undertones to make them more customisable to lots of different skin types and tones.
I rarely get the lightest shade of foundation when I try out new make up so I thought the Nude Beige 125 would suit me well, except it made me so orange. I absolutely couldn’t believe how dark it was. My mom has very olive-y skin and it matched hers well, and I certainly wouldn’t class her skin as ‘fair’. I then tried the lightest shade which is Ivory 115, and again it was still quite dark. Definitely darker than my natural skin tone, which really surprised me. Even my friend said she bought it but couldn’t use it because the lightest shade was still far too dark on her.
Despite the fact it wasn’t a particularly good skin tone match, I decided to wear the foundation for a day to see its lasting power. It doesn’t have waxes or fillers so it’s not a really heavy coverage, but actually has the feel and consistency of oil; ie, it doesn’t spread particularly well and really needs to be rubbed in quite a lot to give an even coverage. If you don’t rub it in you will have extremely obvious blotches. Annoyingly this foundation is one of those which doesn’t dry very well either and I found it coming off on my tissues when I blew my nose which I really don’t like. It felt greasy and wet all day, and actually looked like I was wearing oily fake tan as opposed to foundation, or even just a tinted moisturiser. It’s very lightweight and doesn’t give good coverage at all, and actually made my skin look and feel really greasy. Subsequently within a couple of hours it had completely come off my T-zone, but not before it had clogged up my pores. The rest of my face was left looking patchy and orange, and felt so greasy. This really is a horrid foundation.
Perhaps this foundation would have been better had I bought the gimmicky ‘matching’ powder and concealer, but I think that’s unnecessary expense and time. I’d expected the liquid foundation to be enough to give me an even skin tone. I think the only reason that Maybelline produced the concealer was because they knew the coverage on the foundation was so poor so you’d need something else to cover blemishes, and the powder was the only way they could potentially control excess oils. Thankfully I have relatively clear skin so this wasn’t an issue for me, but I can see how those who need a heavier cover will be drawn into buying those annoying extra products.
If you have oily skin then avoid this foundation. If you have fair skin then look elsewhere. It’s shocking that Maybelline could sell something as awful as this, and then have the audacity to charge £7.99 for it.
