Summary:
I think we’ve all come to appreciate Ikea as the place to go to if we need a little bit of extra storage in our home, or a place to go to if we’ve accidentally smashed all of our plates and need more, or the place to go to if we’re moving home and want to start afresh. It’s no wonder that we probably all have a concoction of mismatched Ikea furniture and lights (I know I do…), and part of my mismatched collection contains the Malm chest of drawers.
The Malm collection is simple and without fuss. The chest of drawers has clean lines and no handles or knobs so it works well in quite minimalist environments if you choose the white, or slightly warmer if you choose one of the wooden finishes. These drawers really are incredibly versatile because they wouldn’t look out of place in a bedroom as a bedside table, or as a storage unit in a study/office, or even as a small storage table for a lounge. The simple style means you really can place these drawers anywhere and they won’t look out of place.
The chest of drawers itself measures 40 x 48 x 55cm with 2 deep drawers of equal size. Plenty big enough to store DVDs stored upright, A4 notepads, or even clothes and shoes, these drawers offer a fantastic storage solution without taking over a large area. The drawers also glide incredibly smoothly and close with a very gentle thud as there’s a muffler inside which prevents horrible slamming noises. As such I’ve been very impressed with these drawers, but I have had a couple of concerns with these drawers. The first is that when the top drawer is opened wide and filled with heavy contents it may begin to tilt. Ikea have attempted to overcome this by providing tools where you can attach the drawers to a wall, but this isn’t ideal if you’re in rented accommodation or if you’re someone who moves furniture around frequently. Plus there’s already 20-something steps involved in building these chest of drawers. Drilling a hole in the wall seemed like unnecessary work so I just put heavier things in the bottom drawer.
As for the workmanship, I can’t really comment on its build quality seeing as I built the chest of drawers myself, but the instructions were simple to follow (although quite time consuming and laborious…) and the quality is good. It hasn’t got any marks or scuffs either. It feels solid, and the surfaces are smooth and easy to clean. It’s a very good choice for £35, as long as you don’t mind having to build it yourself! I just would have liked it to be a little bit more sturdy when the drawers are open.
