Cirque Eloize have produced some fantastic circus/gymnastics-esque shows, and we were given the opportunity to see iD at the Peacock Theatre in Holborn, London. And it was absolutely phenomenal.

iD is jam-packed with highly skilled gymnasts, juggles, cyclists, contortionists and so much more. Every act is different; concentrated on an impressive array of circus skills in an entertaining and breathtaking display. I’m hard to please, but each individual act left my mouth open in awe. It was impossible not to litter the performance with exclaims of ‘wow!’ and ‘how do they do that?!’ throughout.

The show is a story of two rival gangs who are trying to outdo each other out in the back streets somewhere. They compete against each other, trying to fight for territory and respect. It’s only at the end where the two sides unite and they learn that they don’t need to fight each other, and instead they unite, celebrating the array of skills and talents they have.

Whilst circus is often associated with children and clown, there was nothing or childish silly in iD. I noticed the audience had people of a variety of ages who all seemed to be enjoying it; making this an ideal show for everyone. What’s more, seeing as there is no talking throughout, this show is truly international, and yet the stories are easy to follow and understand, and there’s subtle humor. I honestly think that this show covers all the bases in terms of pure skills, fun, humor and variety, topped up for great lighting and stage set-ups, and impressive sound accompaniments.

I couldn’t recommend this show enough, especially as the tickets are around £15 each and totally worth it. However I would suggest sitting in the stalls, but avoid the back few rows as the upper circle obscures the view of some of the higher acts (high up a pole, for example). It really is well worth it!
