For Mother’s Day – one of the things I asked for was MUY BUENO COOKBOOK. Their cookbook spans 3 generations of cooking into 100 mouth watering recipes. I HIGHLY recommend adding this to your cookbook collection! I’ve read the whole thing and there isn’t one recipe I wouldn’t like – which I love. I hate buying cookbooks and liking only a handful of recipes in them.

These ladies started a blog – I think around the same time I started mine, 5 years ago. I’ve watched it grow and turn into a cookbook – which turned into cookbook tours around the country – so happy for their success!

One of the first things I wanted to make was flour tortillas. I checked the ingredients and there was one thing I was missing – shortening. So I put it on my grocery list. When I started to make these, my daughter Claire was with me – she has never seen shortening before – I don’t think I’ve ever bought it before!

There are not that many ingredients – so it’s easy to put together

FLOUR TORTILLAS FROM MUY BUENO COOKBOOK

4 all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/8 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon shortening or lard
1 1/4 cups warm water

I made 20 tortillas from this recipe – if you make them bigger, the that’s OK too! If you make 20 – here is the nutrition information (I use www.caloriecount.com)

Add all the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Add the shortening and combine until it looks like small crumbs (just use your hands to do that).

Add the warm water and mix well by hand. It may be a little sticky – that’s ok. Flour a work surface and place the dough on that and knead the dough for about 5 minutes until the dough is pliable and springy.

I just started pulling apart the dough and making small balls with it. Once I was done making the balls of dough, I heated up a cast iron skillet on medium heat.

I don’t have a tortilla press, so I just used a rolling pin to roll out the tortillas – then you just cook for a several minutes on each side. While one was cooking, I rolled out the next one so it was like an assembly line.

I cooked one – my daughter ate that one, then I made another, one of my sons ate that one, then I made another one – my other son ate that one – I was hoping I would have some left for dinner!
