Tourists have by now developed a ‘hartal fatigue’ but have never faced a situation where popular broiler chicken varieties are struck out of hotel menus. The hotel industry is unsure how meat-loving Europeans will respond to the ban on chicken.“This has not happened before so we are keeping our fingers crossed,” said Jacob Mathews who runs Palate Delights in Kovalam. “Foreigners, especially Russians and the Germans, are legendary meat eaters. They eat fish out of curiosity but they cannot do without meat,” he said. Sudheesh Kumar, the president of Kerala Hotel and Restaurants’ Association that which had called for the chicken ban, said that the industry had already found the alternatives. “Instead of chicken, hotels in Kovalam will throw up quail or duck or turkey dishes,” he said.Hotels that had taken orders too will be in a fix. Therefore, in Kochi the ban on chicken is unlikely to be implemented by top-end hotels. But the star hotels too have given an assurance to the Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association to limit chicken in the menu to the extent possible.
