Getting in the Mix: Boosting Your Nutrition By Blending

We’re all trying to improve the way we eat, but few people can claim to consume their recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day without a struggle. One simple way to turbo-charge your vitamin intake is to invest in a blender. The main grumble about these slick little juice-producers is that they’re tricky to keep clean, but in fact, most modern models are dishwasher safe. As for the ones that aren’t, cleaning them manually is simple: just fill with hot water and detergent and whizz for 30 seconds, then rinse, dry and store. Really, there’s no good excuse not to give your nutrition a boost, so read on for the best ways to apply these handy appliances to your health regime.

At breakfast: fortify for the day ahead

For a healthy and hearty breakfast drink, blend some freshly brewed green tea with soy milk, honey, bananas and frozen blueberries. The green tea and blueberries will give you a fresh blast of antioxidants, while the honey and bananas will make them taste like heaven.

Top tip: Fruit will blend evenly if it’s cut up into similarly sized chunks.

At lunch: sumptuous soup

Making rich, pureed soup could not be simpler when you have a blender. For a quick and easy cream of tomato, add oven-roasted tomatoes and peppers to vegetable stock, celery, carrots and basil. Season, then whizz for 5 minutes. Just before serving, spoon cool crème fraiche on top to taste.

Top tip: when blending soups, keep the ratio of liquid to solid equal for a consistent texture.

At dinner: boost your fiber intake

Stave off sniffles and coughs with a vitamin C-rich strawberry and kiwi kicker. To a cup of apple juice add a banana, a couple of kiwi fruits, a handful of frozen strawberries and some honey to smooth out any tartness. It’s good for your heart, too!

Top tip: For a cold drink without ice, just freeze fruit before you throw it in!

Now that you have these tips at your disposal you can seriously bolster your nutrition. Better still, you can do it in a tasty way. Ain’t that delicious?

What are some of your favorite fruits and veggies you like to blend?
