Birthday Weekend

By Fitnspicy @fitnspicy

For the first time in many years I was out of town for my birthday, and it was exactly what we needed. Scott and I rented a cabin in Washburn, WI (right on Lake Superior) and visited the charming towns in the area, went and saw the ice caves and had great Wisconsin food and beer.

It was the most charming cabin, a ton of charm but a great modern kitchen, a wonderful fire place (much needed since it was barely above 0 most of the weekend) and the red door. I seriously love a red door. We bought food along for most meals and went out Saturday afternoon. Perfect compromise between eating healthier foods and splurging a bit. It was my birthday so I felt like cheese curds and Spotted Cow were appropriate.

The very charming downtown Ashland. Hand painted murals, a great brewery and of course we had to stop at a little hole in the wall local bar too.

But the highlight of our weekend was seeing the Ice Caves. They are only open every few years due to weather conditions, and since we are having a really cold weather we picked a perfect weekend to head up and see them. The local chamber of commerce was estimating an extra $5-7 Million dollars from tourists. That was making local businesses very happy!

Look at these beautiful images! It was quite the hike out to the caves and we probably covered at least 6 miles. We just bundled up really well and enjoy the amazing scenery. If you are ever up in this area and the ice caves are open go see them. It is a must.

Here’s to hoping that this year is a wonderful year! My fingers and toes are crossed.
