Barry M is a great go-to brand for trying out new make up items and techniques. When I found out about the matte nail craze I instantly sought out the Barry M counter in Superdrug, finding a matte black nail paint for £3.99.

On application the nail polish looks like any other; shiny and in need of 2 coats. It’s only after the polish has completely dried that it goes really matte, and this can take about 10 minutes. The result is impressive as my nails really did look matte, but I found that applying a normal top coat made them shiny so as such I avoided using it. Unfortunately this resulted in nails which started cracking after about a day, but I have found mattifying top coats around so they may be preferable.

It’s worth noting that the nail polish goes shiny whenever your hands get wet or you apply moisturiser. Once dry your nails will look matte again, but after about 2-3 days the matte effect reduces and it begins to look like any other chipped nail polish, which is naturally a tad discouraging. However for use on a special occasion, this polish is ideal and it does work; it just can’t quite cut the mustard in terms of longevity yet.
