Starting at 6 a.m. E.D.T. on Father’s Day Sunday, the world’s longest ultra starts winding its way around the Joe Austin Playground and Thomas Edison High School in Jamaica Hills, Queens, New York. There is a 52 day limit (60 mile/ day average). Anyone not finishing the full 3100 miles by that point gets credit and a certificate for whatever distance they achieved.
Called “The Mt. Everest of Ultramarathons” by THE NEW YORK TIMES, the .55 of a mile loop is on mostly concrete paths and includes one significant 8′ hill at the east end of each lap.
Fourteen stalwart runners will answer the starting bell, including the USA’s all-time winningest ultrarunner, Ray Krolewicz. First time runner Jayasalini Olga Abramovskikh will be one of a trio of women taking part along with several former winners, including 2013 champ Vasu Dzuhiy of Russia. Bulgaria’s pioneering multiday specialist Sopan Tsekov also returns seeking his third finish.
