Wimberley’s Newest Addition: Jobell Cafe & Bistro

By Slowdownandsavor

Well, folks. Pregnancy brain strikes again. I really and truly believed that I posted about Jobell Cafe & Bistro, but in a moment of clarity, I realized that all I did was upload the photos! My bad…

Anyway, so last Friday, my husband and I went out on a date-night dinner, and decided that it was time to check out the brand spanking new Jobell, located on RR12, just outside of Wimberley’s town square. I knew nothing of the place, except for what I could find on Facebook. The menu looked great, and the whole place looked to be a nice change of pace for what we’ve got here in Wimberley.

The place looked great. I loved the simple, Hill-Country inspired interior. It was warm, inviting and comfortable. The dining area was small, and even though the place was pretty much packed out by thte time we arrived for dinner, it wasn’t too loud or uncomfortable.

We were seated, provided with menus, placed our drink orders (an iced tea for me and a beer for him) and were left to make some serious decisions. We were informed that they were still going through many growing pains, and some of their menu items were not available, including their pork chop. They also let us know that they quit making fresh pasta in house, stating that people didn’t like it, that they just “weren’t used to the taste and texture of fresh pasta.” Huh? People… don’t like the taste and texture of heaven on earth? Very weird. Who doesn’t like awesome stuff? Crazy people…

Anyway, we decided to start with the mussels, since we LOVE mussels, and my husband chose the shrimp risotto for his entree, and I went with the flank steak, fries and an additional entree portion house salad. What can I say? I was hungry!

The mussels arrived quickly, and both looked and smelled delicious.

After the first bite, my husband and I were a bit saddened by the taste. It was almost as though the mussels were frozen before being cooked. It had a specific… fishy taste that I wasn’t too happy with, but the broth was so flavorful and so tasty.

My mouth just watered for more. So we finished the bowl, fishiness and all. We were a bit leery of our main courses yet to come, but all worries were soon to be put aside.

The salad came, and it was fresh, bright and perfectly dressed. I absolutely loved the dressing and could have had a lot more.

My husband’s shrimp risotto was amazing. There were just layers upon layers of flavor. The rice was creamy, robust and just the aroma itself made my mouth water. I’m so grateful my husband let me sample this velvety dish, but oh man, I wanted more. And more. AND MORE.

But I had my own meal in front of me that I had yet to taste.

And it was wonderful. Perfectly cooked, and wonderfully seasoned, this steak was pretty dang good. I just wished it were a bit larger in size. Otherwise, the flavor was sensational. And those fries!!! Crispy, garlicky goodness all around.

Basically, the meal was a near 10, if it weren’t for those mussels, but I’m sure with time, Jobell will find it’s place here in Wimberley, and I don’t see it going anywhere for a long, long time.
