Wii Sports Boxing Controls [2025]

By Geoff Griffiths @mmatraining1980

I recently did a post about the joys of Wii boxing for fitness and weight loss and all things wholesome.

I’ve been asked a few questions about how the controls work so here you go (I’ll make a video soon too)

For people who are right handed (reverse if you are a lefty)

Stance

  • Proper boxing stance, would be to be side on – with your left foot forwards – it’s a bit more square on in Muay Thai and MMA so don’t worry about it too much if it impacts your ability to throw a right punch and get the Wii to recognize it
  • Hold the nunchucks veritcally

Punches

  • Left jab – straight left punch – stick your left hand out straight
  • Right Cross – straight punch with right hand – put your right hand out towards the screen – twist on your back foot for proper technique for boxing – with heel rotating outwards towards the right
  • Left Hook – Curl your arm a bit/bend at elbow – and throw the left hand from left to right
  • Right Hook – bend your right elbow – keep it bent and throw right hand from right to left
  • Uppercuts – with either hand – lower hand down and bring it straight up with a bent arm
  • Wait until one punch is finished. You can jab quite quickly but other punches are slow

Blocks

  • Hands close to the face blocks face punches
  • Lower the controllers to your tummy to block lower punches – hold them down – parallel to the ground
  • Lean back (with the controls) to ‘lay back’ out of range

Tips

  • Move side to side until the opponent punches (and misses) and then counter with a jab and then an uppercut
  • Jabs work best – throw one or two jabs before an uppercut, hook, or cross
  • The more punches you throw in a row before knocking down an opponent, the less likely they are to get up

Punches are shown below – in case you are not sure what punch is which –
