Its History

The Sanctuary didn’t emerge until 1997 when the land was sold, and it became a protected region of Kangaroo Island. It was later bought by James and Hayley Baillie in 2004, who remain the owners of the sanctuary to this day. The sanctuary is one of the most beloved spots on the island, a heritage for locals with the native species flourishing in the wide-open bushland.

Its Size

The entire sanctuary is 5,000-acres of the bush, with over 200 species of native plant dotted about the region. It is one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on the island, with the buildings and enclosures working in harmony with the environment.

Its Location

The sanctuary is nestled in the west of Kangaroo Island, located in between the Kelly Hill Caves Conservation Park and the Flinders Chase National Park. It is easy to access, sitting right along the main strip of roads, a picture-perfect location offers visitors an exceptional view of both the sprawling beach and thick bushland of the island.

It’s Animals

There are an endless amount of native species of animals living within this sanctuary. Home to popular animals such as the famous koalas found in the tall eucalyptus trees, and kangaroos hopping about the clear grasslands. Reptiles are abundant here, with snakes, lizards, and more found in their sunbaking enclosures. Birdwatching is a popular activity here as well, with many strolling through the bush to see the blue wrens, cockatoos, crimson rosellas, and kookaburras hanging about the region.

Its Accommodation

If one day isn’t enough for you, you can opt to stay in one of the sanctuary’s six self-contained cabins. Here you can enjoy the sounds of the nearby animals as you drift off to sleep, or even see the nocturnal creatures who emerge after nightfall when you venture around after the crowds disperse.

Its Tours

To really discover the highlights of this sanctuary, choosing to join in on a tour is a great choice! These tours range from short guides around the region, to close encounters with the favorite animals. Such as the koala walk which lets visitors get up close and personal with the friendly koalas. There is even nocturnal tours available, letting guests glimpse at the creatures who emerge at dusk.
