The History of Capri
Although it has a long history, Capri first became famous by Emperor Augustus in the early years of the Roman Empire. Monte Solaro
Hike up Capri’s Monte Solaro for the best view in all of the Amalfi Coast! It lies at the highest point of the island, offering guests 360-degree views of the island and the stunning blue waters surrounding it! Depending on how lazy you are feeling that day, you can either hike up the entire trek or take the 12-minute chairlift for a jaw-dropping scenic route! Many opt to climb up to the mountain and then take the chairlift back down, so you get to experience both routes! After you’ve marvelled at the landscape, you can even reward yourself for the hike up with a drink at the bar located right at the top of Monte Solaro, guaranteeing you a picture-perfect view to go with your drink!
The Island’s Ruins
Due to Capri once being the play town for Emperor Tiberius, the island is dotted with extraordinary ruins of his buildings. There were 12 villas in total built, but by far the greatest to visit is the ruins of the Villa Jovis. It was known to be the biggest villa built and far more superior in beauty. Villa San Michele
In 1885, the Swedish physician Axel Munthe came to visit Capri and promptly fell in love. Being an important person in society, being friends and working with royalty and famed individuals in Europe, Munthe was able to build a stunning villa that still is admired by architects to this day. Built-in the Mediterranean style, nestled right along the cliffside, with an extraordinary garden surrounding it. It is truly one of the prettiest buildings on the island, and well worth the visit!
The food
Capri is known for a delicious meal, with many spoiling themselves with a sunset view at one of the award-winning restaurants scattered about. The entire coastline offers some of the best quality ingredients, due to the nutrient-rich volcanic soil surrounding Mount Vesuvius. So, all the meals are to the highest standard possible. Faraglioni Rocks
Depicted on many of the coast’s postcards, the Faraglioni Rocks are truly a fabulous natural wonder to see in person. Many treks out to the rocks via a boat, cruising around the Faraglioni rocks that emerge right out from the blue waters. The three massive rock structures are named after from the Greek word ‘Pharos’ which translates to ‘lighthouse.’ As back in the day, these rocks were once used as lighthouses for the nearby boats traveling the seashores.
Visit the famous Blue Grotto
By far the most well-known attraction in Capri is its fascinating blue grotto. A sea cave nestled along the edge of the island, famous for the blue waters that glow in the dark cave! Measuring at 60 metres in length and 25 metres wide, the cave would simply be a dark dreary tunnel if not for the glowing waters, making the cave come to life! The cave and waters are so beautiful, it was even once used as the private swimming pool of the past Emperor Tiberius, with sculptures found on the bottom of the seafloor. Due to its immense popularity and the limited accessibility, visitors can only see the grotto via a paddle boat!
Visit the green and white grotto
These two grottos may not be as famous as the Blue Grotto, but they are just as good! The Green Grotto is famous its crystal clear green-tinted water that glows when the sunlight hits it. Here you are allowed to swim within the green water, diving down below or swimming to the nearby rocks to marvel at the glowing waters from afar.
The White Grotto isn’t popular for its water, but its white stalactites that cling to the rock. The cave contains two levels, with the bottom only being accessible via boat, and the upper cave extending into the rock, seeming to disappear behind the glistening white teeth of the stalactites.
