When is EMF Dangerous? The Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are fields that are created by electronically charged objects that are in motion, affecting the behavior of already charged objects in the area. Extremely low frequency (ELF) waves are electromagnetic radiation waves that have frequencies from 3 to 300 Hz. The normal and suggestible safe limit of the ELF magnetic field is 2.5 mG. If people are exposed continually to frequencies higher than that, it is believed that they could suffer health problems such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, cancer, and more.
In fact, scientists are researching the effects of ELF waves more and more and letting the public know that certain items most certainly emit much more than the safe levels. For instance, an average hair dryer or vacuum cleaner emits at least 300 mG, which is well above the safe limit.
Keep Clear of High EMFs
EMFs can penetrate through walls and doors, so do your best at keeping your distance from appliances such as your microwave, alarm clock, computer, etc. Also, place your furniture as far away from heaters, lights, and other high EMFs as you can.
There is a hand held meter that you can purchase that will measure EMF. When purchasing new electronics, find ones that have the lowest EMF emitter. You can also contact the local utility company and ask them to test the levels of EMF in your neighborhood. If you live in close proximity to power lines, consult an EMF engineer.
To lessen the amount of EMF emission from your computer, put your computer monitor on “low power standby” mode. What this will do is cause your computer to power down when you have not used to keyboard for a few minutes. This creates a very low radiation output!
Shielding
Shielding devices are available to help lower exposure to EMFs for computers, cell phones, wiring, transformers, and much more. To help with a hair dryer, simply attach a plastic hose to the end of it and point it at your hair to dry.
Interesting Notes

  • According to Dr. David Carpenter, Dean of the Schools of Public Health, SUNY, an estimated 10 to 15% of childhood cancers may be due to the exposure of residential power lines.
  • If homes are exposed to EMF’s, the Wall Street Journal states that the resale value of homes decreases at least 30%.
  • Microwaves can be a big source of EMF emitters. You may want to check your microwave for any leaks.
  • Sweden studies by Maria Feychting show that those in close proximity to high magnetic fields are 3.7 times more likely to develop leukemia.
  • The chances of breast cancer increase with more exposure to EMFs.
  • Electromagnetic radiation from .6 watt cell phones and 4 watt walkie-talkies have been known to cause the malfunction of medical life equipment.
  • The safe level of exposure for computer screens is 30” from the front and 40” from the back.
  • A study by Ahlbom & Feychting, 1993, showed that children who are exposed to EMF levels of 3mG or higher are 3.8 times more likely to develop cancer.
