Every day you wake up, get ready and drive to work. Then you take a cup of coffee and you sit down in front of a computer for eight hours. After a long day, you return back home, watch TV or maybe you read…Each day is full of moments in which you strain your eyes in a double effort for seeing better. But if you don’t take the appropriate measures, it can take its toll on.

For that reason we will give you the some tips about visual health that will help you to identify the most frequent mistakes and how to prevent the discomforts.

Screens, better from a distance

We look at the world through the screens. But they are not precisely big: the high impact of tablets and smartphones nowadays is just an example of how we are used to use this screens that become smaller each day. This situation provokes bad habits that will affect us afterwards while we are watching TV or using the computer. So while you keep reading this post, pay attention to this:

  • How many centimeters are from the screen to your eyes? In the case of the computer, the distance shouldn’t be below the 55cm but in the case of TVs, this distance is larger: 2 meters.
  • Is it well oriented? Neither sideways nor too high or too low. The best position is to put it in front of your eyes and 20 degrees below your visual horizon.

Pay attention to light

The light is one of the external elements that affect to our visual health the most. But, be careful: it is as bad to use too much light as not using enough light. Making extra efforts with our sight with insufficient light is one of the most common mistakes we make. For that reason:

  • Use a good lightening when you are reading or watching TV (don’t do both with the light switch off) so you will avoid reactions or the visual impairments.
  • As always, protecting yourself from the sun and avoiding any kind of reflection are the best ways to protect your eyes. A good pair of sunglasses will help you with that.

Don’t forget the check-ups

At least once a year will not hurt, that’s what the saying says. So check up regularly your vision –especially if you spend too much time in front of a screen– and go to see your doctor if you notice any change or variation in your sight such as eyestrain, stinging, excessive lacrimation or problems to see far away or up close. Optical H optometrist team would be delighted to help you and to find a solution to each of your questions or doubts.

Because if as everyone says, a sight says everything about you or how you feel, make sure then that yours tells everything!
