Unprepared Sailors Reprimanded After Rescue

This was big news for a few days: five American sailors on a sailboat missing somewhere between Guam and the Philippines. After they were reported overdue and out of contact, the Coast Guard launched a massive search covering over 100,000 square miles of ocean. The 38-foot catamaran was finally found - with a damaged rudder and disabled radio - and safely escorted to land. Sail-World quotes the Coast Guard commander as chiding the crew for not filing a float plan and not having an EPIRB or effective communications gear aboard: "This voyage was made without taking basic, commonsense precautions."
