Sometimes I get a really strong urge to do something radically different.... to my hair. Not subtle changes like a trim or highlights. No. I'm talking about big, bold changes. Over the years, many people have been the inspiration behind countless hair-mistakes. From celebrities to friends to colleagues, I followed down a path only to think to myself, "what the f***?" I had a similar desire to chop my hair off and consider a buzz cut after watching an entire season of Project Runway and falling for Anya Anoung Chee's awesome hair. She looks amazing. Thankfully, the sane people in my life convinced me not to go down this path.
Last Sunday, while watching the Golden Globes, I felt the urge again. This time, it was thanks to the one and only, Queen of pixie hair, Tilda Swinton. Fiery red or bleached blond. Her hair (like her style) makes me want to grab the scissors and go for it. The problem is, women like Tilda make me forget my own limitations. No, I'm not a 5"10 lanky Amazonian with alabaster skin, a thin nose and a jaw line to die for. Tilda balances the beauty of an androgynous look with sophistication and a touch of the feminine allure. All of this is to say, she's made the style her own. If I were to go for this look, I'm guessing it would look uncomfortable, unnatural.
Tilda's been quoted as saying she likes to be comfortable in her clothes, like she is wearing PJ's and her style reflects that blase attitude. She looks effortless on the red carpet and has redefined "evening" wear. Remember the garbage bag dress? I don't care what the critics say. I thought she rocked it. She is the muse behind a number of design houses including Pringle of Scotland, Viktor and Rolf and currently, Haider Ackermann (the man who may replace Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel some day).
And at the 2012 Golden Globes, out of a sea of women dressed in typical ivory, pale pink, beaded, laced, body hugging, strapless gowns... Tilda looked like a goddess. LOVE. She could have easily looked like the Mother of the Bride but with the rocking hair, modern accessories and the popped up collars, she was a siren song.
I'm going to put away the scissors for now but this is one hairstyle that I'd like to try some day. Perhaps when I don't have to go to work and I can spend all day perfecting my do.
Enjoy!
