My good ole Aussie gal friend (not girlfriend) returned after a two month sojourn to the United States and we both wanted to catch up for a drink.
Now, she wanted to do cocktails but I am more of a wine person (specifically, red wine and even more specifically anything but Shiraz), so we decided instead of throwing our money away on uninspired and diluted cocktails made on rooftops of tall buildings, we wanted to make our own cocktails in the comfort of her air-conditioned condo instead.
I know what you must be thinking…Drinking in the afternoon?!
But if you think about it logically, most of the time, we get hangovers because we drink too much and there is not enough recovery time before the bright sun wakes you up the next day. If we start drinking at 3pm, get a little happy and clear out by 9pm, you will have enough time for your body to rest and recover by the next morning. I even went to the gym the next morning and felt absolutely perfect!!
Now back to our cocktail ‘event’. The plan was to have an exquisite, elegant afternoon sampling 5 different types of cocktails, while nibbling from a cheese and olive platter complete with 1920s jazz music playing softly in the background.
It didn’t turn out quite as planned. We were sampling cocktails alright, by the gulpful…and when it was 4pm, we were floating sky high… and having great fun! Forget about the jazz music, we put on a trashy TV show and laughed our heads off while spilling cocktails and scattering cracker crumbs all over the lounge.
By 9pm, I was trotting my way back home in the train…smiling at my own reflection most of the way…So that was my weekend…trashy, cheap and fun…how was yours?
Here are some photos we took before 4pm, and some recipes for those who are interested in making their own cocktails.
The Ginopolitan
Ginopolitan (a twist on Cosmpolitan, with added gin)
• 1 shot vodka
• ½ shot gin
• ½ shot Cointreau
• 4 shots cranberry juice (I prefer Del Monte)
• Squeeze of juice from ¼ lime
Measure the above into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, cover and shake the hell out out it for 10 secs. Pour into cocktail glass
VOC Spritzer
VOC Spritzer
This cocktail requires 1 month prep of an infused vodka (Vanilla Orange Coffee vodka)
• 1 bottle vodka
• 40 coffee beans
• 1 vanilla pod, sliced into half lengthwise
• 1 orange, pierced all over with a fork
• 100 grams of sugar
Combine all of the above in a wide neck Mason jar (or any airtight wide neck jar which you can fit a whole orange and all of your vodka in), cover and keep in a cool, dark place for a month. When you take it out after a month, it should be a golden brown colour. Filter back into the original vodka bottle. This is also good served over ice after dinner. To make VOC spritzer, simply measure a shot (or 2) into a tall glass with ice, top up with soda water and a squeeze of quarter lime.
Quick Fuck
Quick F**k
I rarely do shots because I think its for frat boys only, but I do really love this simple but great tasting shot drink…
• ¾ shot Midori Melon Liqueur
• ¼ shot Bailey’s Irish Cream
Pour the Midori into the shotglass and then float it with the Irish Cream by carefully letting it dribble down the inside of the shot glass.
