The keto diet: “The results were nothing short of miraculous”

Kevin was overweight and constantly felt tired and unenergetic. Getting up in the morning was a battle, but with a family to take care of, he didn't really care about his own health. Then he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and knew it was time to make some drastic changes:

Dear Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt,

I can only thank you and your team for your wonderful resource and it is only right I share my success story as a result of Diet Doctor, the instant impact it has had on my life and my recent diagnosis as type 2 diabetic.

What was your life like before?
Living life in ignorant bliss! I knew my eating habits were not great - lots of convenience foods, takeaways etc. I kidded myself that with three teenage kids to bring up focussing on my own health and dietary needs was an impossibility.

I was hovering around 14 stones (200 lbs) (BMI 31) for a good while, with low fitness activity. I would constantly feel tired and unenergetic. Getting up in the morning was a battle.

What happened that changed things?
I went for my 40+ NHS Health Check feeling in reasonable health. I knew my weight would be an issue. I had also noticed an increase in thirst and the need to urinate, including waking 2 or 3 times a night which affected my sleep regime.

The initial screening brought no surprises, the shock came when my blood results returned.

The initial screening brought no surprises, the shock came when my blood results returned. I was recalled to my doctor and diagnosed type 2 diabetic with a HbA1c of 94 mmol/mol (10.8%), a reading of 48 and above puts you in the red. This hit hard and I knew it was time to make some drastic changes. I had suffered the sad loss of two siblings at an early age, on from breast cancer at 33 and one from an epilepsy-related condition at 21. They didn't get a choice, I did. It was only right for the sake of my wife and children that I took it.

What is your life like now?
I hit google hard and trawled through the plethora of information out there with respect to my newly diagnosed condition. Truly overwhelming and lots of conflicting advice. Luckily, I stumbled across Diet Doctor and after watching some of the videos and success stories I made an instant decision to give the 2-week challenge a crack. I literally followed the guidance verbatim. Best decision of my life. It didn't even feel like dieting, no calorie counting, no real hunger, just being careful with the ingredients you choose, a bit of planning and getting over the "fat fear". I would class it more of a WOE (way of eating).

The results were nothing short of miraculous. The weight fell off at a decent rate of 1-4 lbs per week. I had stacks of energy. I was sleeping better and waking up in the morning naturally feeling ready and raring to go. So once the challenge was up, I was sold - LCHF was the way forward. I combined it with 16:8 IF (intermittent fasting) which was surprisingly easy. I am also now able to add in longer fasts without even thinking about it. If I don't feel hungry I will increase the 16-hour fast until I do. I have managed 36 hours without trouble just on lots of fluids (water, bulletproof coffee and bouillon).

Well, the results speak for themselves. I had my first diabetes review on July 19th and was amazed...

The keto diet: “The results were nothing short of miraculous”

I had lost 10 kg, BMI down to 27.2 and best of all my HbA1c shot down to 36 mmol/mol (5.5) which is well into the low risk category and well under the level considered as even pre-diabetic! All in around 12 weeks!

What was your biggest challenge and how did you approach it?
Although my diet previously was poor, I was not a "sugary" person. I didn't have sugar in tea/coffee, I rarely snacked, would choose starter/mains over mains/dessert so finding a way of eating that would make an impact seemed impossible. When I analysed my diet fully, I recognised my biggest sin was the amount of carbs I consumed. I lived on pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. When I saw the portion size of a pasta dish containing 20 g carbs I was horrified. I would easily eat 8-10 times this amount in one sitting. So I made a conscious decision to hit the carbs hard. What do you wish you had known when you started?
Nothing really. Diet Doctor gave me all the information and resources I needed to crack on instantly. If anything, I wish I had known about it sooner!
