The keto diet: Reversing type 2 diabetes

Keith was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and felt like his health was failing. Fortunately he found the keto diet. Here's what happened:

I was always fatigued, could barely walk a block without getting tired

In January 2017, at 63 years of age, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I had probably been living with it unknowingly for years. In 2009 my doctor recommended the South Beach diet because I was showing blood-sugar levels that were considered pre-diabetic. I stayed on it for a while but then, as with all other diets I've tried in my life, I failed and put all the weight back on, plus some. When I was officially diagnosed last year with type 2 diabetes I was a whopping 284 pounds (129 kg). I was always fatigued, could barely walk a block without getting tired and my health was failing.

At that time, my daily glucose readings ranged from 220 to 400. In February 2018, my A1c had reached 10.1. I was fast on my way to being in the grave in a couple of years if I didn't take control of my diabetes and health.

In March 2018, our friend Vickie, who is a type 1 diabetic, told us about the keto way of life. She shared some interesting data Dr. Ken Berry puts out on YouTube. The things Dr. Berry said made total sense to us and we decided we needed to give keto a try. Both I and my girlfriend decided to give this Keto way of life a try. We officially started on March 5, 2018.

Being on the path to curing my Type 2 diabetes

On May 24, 2018, I had a 90-day follow-up appointment with my doctor. When he came to the exam room with my chart he immediately started to fist pump me with praise of congratulations, he was ecstatic. I am now at 233 pounds (106 kg)! I have lost 51 pounds (23 kg) and my girlfriend has lost 25 pounds (11 kg). I went from a 42-inch (107 cm) waist to a 38-inch (96 cm) waist. But, here's the best part, my A1c came down to 5.7 and all my health markers have improved. He called me his poster child for being on the path to curing my Type 2 diabetes.

I was on Metformin, Pravastatin, Glimepiride, and Invokana. I shared with him that I was living the keto way of life and surprisingly, he was not negative about it. He only advised me to be careful if I came off this lifestyle and back to the Standard American Diet because my glucose level could increase from the shift.

He has taken me off of most of my medications with the exception of Metformin which he wants me to decrease to 1000 mg a day for the next 90 days as a precaution. He told me when I come back in 90 days if my health markers are the same, he will more than likely take me off all medication...I will have cured my type 2 diabetes!!!
