According to Wikipedia, Sandals are an open type of outdoor footwear, consisting of a sole held to the wearer's foot by straps passing over the instep and, sometimes, around the ankle. In short, any type of footwear with straps and sole is in fact sandals. So name your style, they are sandals.
The word sandal came from the Greek word, sandalon. There are two types of “Greek sandalon” which are baxeae and cothurnus. Baxeae is the kind of sandals that comic actors and philosophers of that time wore. Whilst cothurnus, a boot sandal, is what we usually see in the movies worn by horsemen, actors, hunters, and upper class people.

On the other side of the world however, you will see another kind of sandals. From the Japanese is the geta. These resemble the modern day clogs and flipflops. The geta is made of an elevated wood with a strap or thong to secure the foot. This is usually worn with the Japanese traditional dress, Kimono or Yukata.
