The Birdcage: a Cocktail Evening

By Clo Hutch @lashesoflife

I was lucky enough to recently be invited along to try out the brand new cocktail menu at Bird of Smithfield.

Nestled away near Farringdon, this awesome little drinking hotspot has a ground floor bar, restaurant, roof terrace and a fab little basement bar called the Birdcage – this is where we spent part of our evening.

The Birdcage was really cool. It’s atmospheric with low lighting and some great paintings and décor, including ofcourse, birdcages, which actually added a real chic feel. It is quite small, so it’s worth getting there early to settle onto one of their comfy seats at either end of the bar. Just a note, It’s also a little tricky for photos due to lighting. I was lucky enough to be able to use some of their photographer’s* images so I could show you what it’s like.

More about the cocktails:

Bird of Smithfield’s Chief Mixologist Stan has been secretly concocting a brand new cocktail menu which I was lucky enough to get to try. Crafted using all manner of ingredients from smoke and burning herbs to preparing some delicious candied fruits, Stan also introduced some new vodkas, gins, mezcals and more to the drinking repertoire.

The cocktails themselves looked really interesting. There were some quite fun designs, and the three cocktails I tasted were really good. My favorite being the cocktail served with a little bird biscuit on top – how cute!

We also saw a smoking skull being delivered to a few tables around the edge of the room which seemed to be attracting lots of attention – theatrical drinks always do, right? The bar team opened these to reveal another drink – I thought this was pretty cool and definitely topped all of the other cocktails in creativity and design.

As mentioned, they have a roof terrace too, so it’s perfect for the summer weather which I’m hoping makes a return soon! I’m sure I’ll be heading back for a cheeky cocktail or two!

Have you been yet? What did you think?
