The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Saint Mary's University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Urban Geography with specialization in at least two of these subject areas: Urban Development, Urban Planning, Urban Social Geography and/or Urban Environmental Geography. The successful appointee will also be expected to contribute to and expand the department's GIS offerings. The successful appointee will teach at all levels of the undergraduate program and supervise theses at the honours and Master's levels, and therefore must have a demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness. It is expected that the successful appointee will establish a rigorous research program commensurate with his or her expertise, and will fulfill departmental, faculty, university and community service needs as occasions arise. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in hand or hold ABD status with the dissertation near completion. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2015.

The Faculty of Arts is particularly interested in scholars with creative approaches to undergraduate and graduate education teaching. The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies offers honours, majors, and minors in both B.A. and B.Sc. degree programs, and a Master of Arts initiated in 2013. It also contributes to the Masters of Applied Science and Masters in Atlantic Canada Studies. It is a key partner in the new School of the Environment, and a significant contributor to the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (B.E.S.) degree program in the Faculty of Arts, as well as the Environmental Science program in the Faculty of Science. Saint Mary's is located in the historic port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is a vibrant, urban community of over 350 000 people.
