Sydney Fish Market

By Takeeatfoodblog
Sydney Fish Markets has been around for years and the only time I actually go is when I have family or friends visiting from overseas. The last time I went to the Sydney Fish Markets was a couple of years ago and one day my friend and I, being spontaneous, decided to make our way there for lunch! The smell of fish and other seafood hits you once you step out of your car, I am not particularly fond of that fishy smell but it did bring back memories of when I was kid and coming to the fish markets with my parents (good times!). My friend and I arrived there by car at around 12pm and luckily there was a lot of parking (parking is quite expensive depending on how long you choose to stay).

The Fish Markets was already buzzing with people, mainly tourists, as it is a great place to show off our fresh seafood produce to visitors. My friend and I decided to order a seafood platter for two, a box of fresh sashimi and a dozen fresh oysters. I think our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach! The shop we purchased the platter from had options of platters for 1, 2 or more (the prices vary for each platter).

Finding a place to sit was quite difficult, inside was fully packed that people even had to share a table- similar situation outside but not as bad. At first I saw some empty seats directly outside one of the entrances but unfortunately I was told to move immediately by a staff member because those seats were only for customers of that particular shop. In the end I found a seat/ table outside under the umbrellas but a big warning to everyone, you will get attacked by seagulls! The seagulls hang around your table and they strike when you're off- guard.

I think the biggest problems with all the produce in the fish markets now is that they fry everything or add some weird topping on it like cheese or bacon. I definitely prefer fresh seafood (non- fried), however there are platters that have just fresh seafood but I noticed a majority of the shops fried most of the seafood.
Picture Picture Picture Our seafood platter for two was definitely worth the amount we paid, it was roughly around $38 (I don't remember the exact price). In the platter you get octopus, scallop, oysters with cheese and bacon, calamari, fried fish and chips. The calamari was quite tasty, it had a nice thin layer of crumb on the outside and it was not chewy like some calamari I have eaten before. The octopus had a unique soy sauce marinated over it but it was very tough and rubbery. The oysters were ruined by the cheese and bacon toppings, it was very oily and basically the fresh oysters taste was lost. The scallops were marinated and covered in a sweet chilli sauce and was not too bad put together but I do prefer the Chinese version of scallop (soy sauce and spring onions). The fried fish had too much batter put around it, so it was very floury and oily.

Sashimi
The sashimi was definitely not disappointing, it was absolutely delicious and fresh! The only problem was that a seagull attacked us and knocked half of it onto the table.... from that moment my friend was determined to get revenge on that seagull :P

Oysters
The oysters were extremely fresh and refreshing, it definitely tasted like the ocean :P If you're not a fan of that fishy/ salty taste I recommend to squeeze a lot of the lemon onto it.
Picture Overall, it was quite an enjoyable meal- it was definitely something different from the usual. I think the seagulls sort of ruined our meal by continually attacking and hanging around us! I would highly recommend that you find a seat indoor rather than outside, unless you don't mind birds stealing your food :P The fresh seafood, like the sashimi and oysters, are much more enjoyable and tasty than the fried seafood. We were there for around 1 hour and parking cost us $3.00 but if you don't drive or don't want to, the Sydney Fish Markets is around a 15-20 minute walk from Darling Harbour.

Happy eating x
