One of the main advantage of PDF document is it is printer friendly.
When ever I create any document in Office(either Open office or MS office) I will save a copy of document as PDF. This will really help me in two ways
1.PDF Keeps the document formatting
2.PDF file is ultra portable.You can easily publish them on-line or you can save them in your cloud storage like Dropbox.
Everybody knows well about Adobe PDF reader as it is one of the legacy PDF reader.Also many web browsers come pre installed with Adobe reader.But one backdrop with Adobe is you have to buy the premium version even for a little editing too.So lets see some other PDF tools available .
1.Nitro PDF reader : It has some tricky features like Drag and drop file creation, instant file preview etc. personally I like the watermark creator feature. you can get this free download from nitroreader.com

2.Pdfsam : This is an Open source tool which merges a number of PDF files into single PDF file.This can also split a big PDF file into pieces as your wish.
3.Microsoft Office: Well it is not actually a PDF creator but With some add ons you can save your word document as PDF file. Also you can save your Excel or any Presentation(PPT) as PDF file. This feature is available in Office button by default with MS Office 2010 or later. Converting your PPT into PDF file is a good habit when your are sending it as read only file. Also you can retain the document format and reduce the file size drastically.
4. Inkscape : actually this is a powerful open source graphics editor. But we can use this to edit PDFs too. Infact you can have an additional feature "Hand writing(or drawing)"which is present only in Inkscape.
5. PDF Labs is for the people who want to play with PDF files. The tool kit present in the website is handy but not so user friendly as it is through command line interface. The good thing about this tool kit is it available in many platforms.
