So Why College, Sarah?

By Sarahohm @sarahohm
Hey Loveys,
I know I gave a brief announcement that I'll be returning back to college as of January. I also realized that I didn't really give much information about the whole "why?" part.
So why college??
Well let's take a small step back in time to my first bout of college from 2007-2009. I went to school in London, ON.. Fanshawe College (whoot!) for Fitness & Health Promotion. At the time I went to college, I knew I really enjoyed working out.. so why not go to college for that?
Side note - I think kids are too young in high school to be picking a career they want to do for the rest of their lives. I'm still SO YOUNG and I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I don't know how a 16 or 17 year old is supposed to know exactly what they want to do without ever having 1. done anything ever, 2. lived on their own or 3. lived in the REAL world.
So I went to college for Fitness. Basically my whole college program was dedicated to making personal trainers. That isn't a bad thing! I know a lot of very successful personal trainers, but I quickly realized that the art of personal training wasn't for me, I knew I kind of wanted to be in the "business of fitness". When I graduated I had a diploma in Fitness & Health Promotion. You can't really be any more specific than that. Back then obviously this was a great accomplishment! I had a full time job coming right out of college, had my own apartment, life was GREAT! Growing and learning and developing personally however, I've come to realize that my diploma was much too specific for me, and it kind of limited where I could go in terms of my career.
Don't get me wrong, I love my job and the people I work with and I have loved all of the jobs I've had! I just know that some of my interests are changing as I'm growing as a person and going back to school is "step 1" of trying to figure out where I want to go and what I want to do! This blog has actually helped me realize what I love doing! When choosing a career, I think it's important not to pick something because you know it makes you money, because you won't ever be happy. You have to find something your passionate about and go from there. This blog has quickly become one of my passions and so has everything social media and marketing/pr related! I love love love it! It's what I do on my spare time and I can't say more than just how much I love it.

My future school!

So I'm choosing to go into a marketing program in college because I feel that graduating with a diploma in marketing is extremely transferable. A diploma in Fitness & Health Promotion kind of limits a person to staying in the fitness industry in some capacity. With a diploma in marketing, if I want to stay in the fitness industry then I can totally work in marketing in the fitness industry. If I want to work in the music industry, I can do marketing/pr in the music industry. If I want to work in the fashion industry, I can do marketing/pr in the fashion industry.
See where I'm going with this?
It just opens up a lot of new doors for me that aren't currently available for me! I also really enjoy being a student and I always have.
I also think that going back to school at a later age is going to help me be successful. The first time I went to college, well, let's be honest... the only thing I was really concentrating on was boys and vodka. I didn't do poorly in college by any means. I did study sometimes lol.. but I also went out and drank a lot probably 3 nights a week... and sometimes more. Want to see?

Yeeeah... well we all have our time, right? :)
I do hope I make some friends in college, however I know my focus now isn't to go out and party, I'm kind of like half over that. I know how well I want to do in my courses and I know I want a great job when I graduate and that's a lot of motivation for me to do well.
So there you have it!! I hope that makes sense. It makes sense in my brain. Lol!
Onto a lovely fitness update. This week I've been working out with Trainer Friend. He's putting me through this medium-brutal workout where we do 2 rounds of like 6 exercises, but instead of doing heavy weights with lower reps, we're doing lighter weights with lots of reps. Yesterday we did chest, and hamstrings and biceps and shoulders. Today we did back, quads and triceps. I am a bit sore from yesterday's workout so I can only imagine what tomorrow is going to bring! It might be just a light cardio day, or if it's nice out a run outside!
Q: Have you gotten some good workouts in this weekend?
Q: Have you done college more than once? How was your experience the second time around?
