Today's post is a one requested by a very dear friend of mine. I am going to sharing my tips for creating smokey eyes. I am not saying that I am an expert on smokey eyes or anything, its just how I do it, and what helps me create a smokey eye. I am self taught and I am not a makeup artist, so just keep that in mind, I am just sharing my tips.
This has to be the most asked questions to me by my friends and relatives. We have so many eye shadows but how do we know which ones to pair together?
So the answer is I dont really know. What I do is sit with my makeup open it all and do the swatches on my i hands and see what colors look good together, how I can mix them and blend them together, and if I like the result I experiment on my eyes. I dont get it correct always, but with practice you do come to know what colors work for you and what dont. What kind of shape works for your eyes. Here is an example of how I decide to do my eyes.
2. PRIMER/ EYESHADOW BASE :
It applies to any eye makeup, but especially for smokey eyes you need to use a primer so that the darker colors of the eye shadows stay put. Fall outs from lighter colors are forgiving, not so much from darker eye shadows, also we all know the primer makes the makeup stay longer. My personal recommendations are NYX EYESHADOW BASE if you have pigmented lids, or else URBAN DECAY PRIMER POTION its very light and blends well and makes the eye shadow color pop.
3. MAKEUP BRUSHES:
The correct tools are essential to achieve perfection, or atleast strive for it. What I mean is you need the correct makeup brushes to create the smokey eyes you desire.
Flat eye shadow brush is a must, to pack on the color to the eye lids.
Next you need a couple of blending brushes.
One to apply the colors on the crease and another one to just blend it. This is not the case always, but I prefer to do it like that. Specially if you are a beginner its advisable to do use two blending brushes to avoid getting a muddy look. I often times made this mistake. Do not use the same brush to blend the darkest color on the outer corner and the transition color on the crease. Use two separate blending brushes for this. Amongst the other smokey eye tips this one is the one you should always always do.
4. LESS IS MORE:
While doing smokey eyes always remember to gradually build the color, dont apply the desired intensity of the color at once, instead take little at a time. Like for instance to achieve this intensity in the last picture always start like the first picture and gradually build the color.
5. FILL YOUR EYEBROWS:
This is a must for a complete look. I cant emphasize the importance of filling your eyebrows enough. Eyebrows shape your face, so its important to fill it and give it proper shape. 6.BLENDING IS THE KEY:
SMOKEY EYES=BLENDING. The better you are at blending the better you get at creating sultry smokey eyes. Always use gentle strokes while blending, also where you hold your brush decides the intensity of your hold. The lower you hold it the lighter the application and blending and the closer you hold it to the tip the tighter and rougher your blending will be. So always hold the brush in the middle.
