Orkney-based ultra marathon runner, William Sichel heads to Taiwan for a 48 hour race this week for the first time in 13 years. His destination is Taipei, the capital of Taiwan and their 48 Hour road race taking place from Friday February 14th to Sunday 16th.
The event is the 2014 Taipei International ultramarathon which features 6/12/24 and 48 events plus 12 & 24 hour relays. 750 people have signed up for the event which is one of the biggest fields in the world. Most people have signed up for the team relays and 450 people have signed up for the 6 hour which is a mark of how popular ultrarunning is becoming.
William last ran in Taiwan in 2001 when he was invited to the Soochow 24 Hour track race.
“I was really impressed by the warm welcome I received, the enthusiastic people and the well organised events. Hence I am happy to return this year. I had to decline an invitation to return two years ago as it came too late and my race plans were already in place. So I’m delighted to be able to return this year.
William is expecting a small field in the 48 Hour event, but a quality one, with leading athletes from Japan and Australia competing alongside local runners, so the competition will be tough. A very large entry is expected in the shorter events that will be held concurrently.
Regular updates will be available on William’s web site www.williamsichel.co.uk
